Cemetery in Delgany
« on: Sunday 14 June 09 12:05 BST (UK) »
I am going to be in Wicklow soon and am trying to find the location of the cemetery that my great grandparents are in.  I have been told that they were buried in Delgany.  The cemetery was overgrown and locked up so that you gould not get in.  Does this cemetery so familiar to anyone?

not very familiar with the town but there is a church and graveyard visible in Delgany on Google Maps - satellite view at : http://www.rootschat.com/links/06hk/

You can switch to the map view to get a better idea of the location.
there may be more than one church & graveyard in the town

are you looking for a Church or Ireland or Catholic graveyard ?

Cantwell's memorials includes two Delgany graveyards

  Christ Church (C. of I.)
  Old Graveyard (C. of I.)

but the maps included is not detailed enough to figure out the exact location on a current map.

It looks like the Google map is showing the Christ Church (CofI)
a photo of this church and the old graveyard are included here :

apparently The Old Burial Ground has been restored and is open for visitors..

Delgany is is still a small village - its not hard to find the Church and new graveyard - the old graveyard is overgrown and not many gravestones survive.

Gravestones inscriptions from both graveyards can be found at

Apologies for late reply. Delgany has two cemeteries, a new one and the old one. The old cemetery, dating back to the middle ages, is no longer overgrown, but well kept. Famous because of the cross shaft. But a few years ago a medieval baptism font has been discovered inside the cemetery. I enclose a couple of pics.
Unfortunately the cemetery has to be locked every night nowadays due to vandalism in the locality. The 21st century has caught up with Delgany - unfortunately.
