Wordley birth
« on: Wednesday 17 June 09 13:27 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have just received the marriage cert for James Wordley and Elizabeth Underwood.  Up until now I had thought James father was Charles, info gathered from IGI.  However the marriage cert has blown all that out the window!

James father was James so I am now trying to find out when James snr was born and who he married.  Can anyone help?

James jnr was born according to census 1823 in Dawley Magna/Stirchley, married Elizabeth Underwood in 1847 in Shifnal and from what I can gather had 3 children, dying in 1865.

Any help much appreciated.

Hi LKL

Another name that changes through generations, most of the certificates I have for the younger generation they are down as Whordley, but James was down as Wordley on his marriage cert and yes Walley in the 51 which didn't help when trying to find him.

I don't have access to ancestry so can check the 41 out - maybe his father died before the census but then you say he is a bit older.

I can only find 2 James Whordley/Wordley's in 1841

Aqueduct, Stirchley, all b Shropshire

Elizabeth Whordley 60, widow
James 20 labourer
Thomas Pitt 25, carpenter
Eliza Pitt 25
William Pitt 4
Jemima 2

The other James is the son of Charles & Mary who you have now ruled out. So looks possible that James' mother was Elizabeth (maybe Eliza Pitt was James' sister?)

Shirl

Just checked IGI for Eliza Wordley & she did marry Thomas Pitt in Stirchley 10 Oct 1836, so the 1841 census looks like the right one.
North,Noble,Harrison,Seller - North Riding Yorks parishes
Brown,Brooks,Watson - Belper/Duffield Derbys
Hole - Ashover Derbys
Webb, Flavell, Mason - Staffs (mainly Sedgley)
Bevan,Beamond - Chirbury Shropshire
Longridge - Northumberland/Durham
Freeman - Hampshire, Oxfordshire,Sussex
Smith - Derbyshire and Yorkshire
Whitehead - Yorkshire
Morris - St Pancras Yorkshire etc

Hi Shirl

Thanks - Eliza is a name that runs in that side of the family as does Elizabeth.

Hi Past Master

Have you changed your name - where did I get the name LKL from?!!

Sorry think I misunderstood your message and thought you meant I should have a look hence my comment about not having access to ancestry except I put can instead of can't look it up!!  :-[

At least now it looks like that's my James -- just need to find out if it was an Elizabeth that James snr married.
