Hi Alan,

I'm not sure whether this 1861 census is any use, showing more children:

1861
RG9/4394 41 5
St Helier, Jersey
10 Hill St

John Palmer, head, 42, Sailor, b. England
Ellen, wife, 40, b. do.
William H, son, 16, Servantman, b. Jersey St Heliers
Louisa, dau, 11, scholar, b. do.
Ellen, dau, 9, scholar, b. do.
Alice, dau, 4, scholar, b. do. - blind
John R, son, 1, b. do.
+ 4 boarders

(The 1871 census also shows a son Henry then aged 9, and motes that little Alice was blind from smallpox  :()

Hi, just read your post.  I don't know if it would be useful to you ( you may have all the info you need) but I live in Bratton, Wiltshire.  The parish registers are no longer held in St James's Church, they were moved to the new Chippenham offices.  If John Palmer came from Bratton his family may be in church yard and I would be happy to look for you.  We also have a Baptist Chapel in the village. Any info you need about the village, if I can help, I would be happy to.

Hi Alan,  give me a couple of days and I'll have a scout around the church yard(s).  Do you have any idea of addresses? The oldest part of Bratton is known as Luccombe, Stradbrooke and Lower Road.  Bratton 200 years ago was quite an industries village.  There was an iron works ( founded 1806 ) and Mill  with bakery and shops, although it's rural it is only a few miles from Westbury which had the railway. There was also a huge ( and still is) farming community.  I'll get back to you when I have the info.  Bye for now.  Angie

Hello Alan, well I have spent a very pleasant afternoon wandering around St James's Church and the Baptist Chapel; I'm afraid it wasn't very fruitfull, no Palmer gravestones at all ! I have spoken with the church wardens for both the church and the chapel.  It's not a local name they recognise ( whilst they cut the grass)  The older records for St James's are now in Chippenham, however all the records for the Baptist Chapel are still in place and they have agreed to let me ( next week) trawl through the boxes - exciting!  On a more positive.. I found an 1841 census for John Palmer it reads:
Palmer, John   M 25 b. 1816 England
Palmer, Samuel M 60 b. 1781 England
Palmer, Christiana F 20 b. 1821 England
Palmer, Jane F 19 b. 1822 England.
The address is Union Road, Great, St Helier, Jersey.  Which seemed to fit in with your John Palmer getting married the following year.

I also found a marriage for Samuel Palmer to Ann Godwin 2 June 1816 In Cricklade.  Samuel's occupation is listed as 'yeo'.  Witnesses Thomas Godwin, yeo Cricklade.  It is the only marriage I can find listed for Wiltshire at this time?

I hope this fits in with your search.  I will let you know if any Palmer's come up in the Baptist Chapel records.

Good luck.. Angie
