Robert (DRUMMOND?) DAVIS - Died Forbes, NSW
« on: Monday 22 June 09 04:19 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I was wondering if anyone possibly had information on Robert DAVIS who died 30 Mar 1873 in Forbes.  According to his death cert he is buried in Forbes Cemetery.

The difficulty I am finding is this:

Marriage Cert - married as Robert DRUMMOND to Margaret Fitzgerald 29 Jun 1849 in Bathurst.  No parents listed for either.

Death Cert - died as Robert Davis.  Again no parents listed (other than Father UNKNOWN DAVIS).  He had been in Australia for 35 years and was born in Egland.  According to this cert he had 6 male children and 1 female.  One of these was Robert Freeman Davis (of Bushmans Lead), who was the informant.  Another is Mark Drummond Davis (my ancestor) who was born 1865 in Forbes.

If anyone can offer any assistance I would greatly appreciate it.

regards
Lisa :-)

Hi Lisa

I wonder if there is an error in the parish records or perhaps the transcription from the parish records to NSW bdm of the marriage of Robert DRUMMOND to Margaret FITZGERALD in 1849.  Drummond is an unusual 2nd given name. Perhaps it was thought it was his surname.

Only four births registered. I would hazard a guess that at least a couple of the three male births were at Bathurst as they married there in 1849 and the first registered birth in 1857 was also Bathurst. There is a six year gap from the first registered birth in 1857 Bathurst to the first birth registered Forbes in 1863.   Civil reg commenced 1856 and perhaps they other three chn weren't baptised so no records available for transcription to NSW bdm.  Read the history of BDM in NSW here

Hi Cando,

Thanks.  I hadn't thought about that!  (transcription error or parish records error).  How would I find out?

I have found all of those births registered in NSW.  Can't find Robert Freeman Davis - this is the son who was the informant on the death certificate.  But as you say, he may not have been baptised?  The other possibility is they were baptised under the Drummond name?

It is an unusual second name, but it came down to his son Mark and Mark's daughter (my great grandmother) Catherine.  I have always thought it was possibly the maiden name of Robert's mother, as I have seen this happen with other ancestors.

cheers

Hi Lisa,

I wonder if some are listed as DRUMMOND

DRUMMOND Robert 1850/V18503213 162B parents Robert and Margaret Bathurst; Kelso, St Michael's; Co. Bathurst, Roman Catholic

DAVIS Edwin 1858/V1858156 7 Father Robert Bathurst; Kelso, St Michael's; Co. Bathurst, Roman Catholic

DRUMMOND Frederick 1859/13012 Parents Robert and Margaret

Do you know what Roberts occupation was or where he may have come from?

Cheers Kris  :)

Hi Kris,

His occupation was listed as Blacksmith on his death certificate.  Considering the timeframe and area's he lived in (Bathurst, Forbes) I suspect he may have either tried his hand at finding gold or gone where the people were to ply his trade.  I am going to check mining leases soon.

As for his origins, all I have is "England" on his death cert.  Hmmm..  big place that!  :o

Did Robert Davis die in Forbes, or was his death registered in Forbes?

The reason I ask is that before 1874, deaths which occurred in present-day Parkes, then known as Currajong, Bushmans Lead and several other names, would have been registered in Forbes.

One of these was Robert Freeman Davis (of Bushmans Lead), who was the informant.

Hi Jean,

He actually died in Currajong I think, but he is buried in Forbes Cemetery.
