What happened to Martha McCracken
« on: Tuesday 23 June 09 12:01 BST (UK) »
Hi All,
I hope someone can help me with this, as it's been puzzling me for quite a while now. Martha was born in 1806 in Kirkmaiden, the daughter of Archibald McCracken and Jean McGaw. (my 4xGrtGrandparents). She is on the 1851 census living at High Curghie, Kirkmaiden aged 43 unmarried, I can't find her after that, so any help would be very much appreciated! her brother Alexander is my 3xGrtGrandfather.
Kind Regards
Beannie

MMh a difficult one

I can't find a death for her as either a Mc or Mac in the OPrs

The only 2 Marthas born +- 10 years of 1806 who die after 1855 and before 1906 are

1. 1866 MCCRACKEN MARTHA   MURPHY F 66 BLYTHSWOOD GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/06 0165
2.  1874 MCCRACKEN MARTHA   RENNIE F 77 WHITHORN /WIGTOWN

As no.2 dies in Wigton you may have to look for a marriage of a McCraken to a male Rennie between 1851 and 1874 and see if she's your lady.
~~~~~~~~----------------------
Cannot find a marriage in either the OPRs or after 1855 for a Mc/Mac marriage after 1855.  Possibly isn't her as I can imagine someone taking years off - but not adding them.  But once again - depends on the informant knowledge.
Regards,   Steve
Hi Steve,
Thank you so much for trying, I really appreciate it. She just seems to have disappeared, there's no mention of her on any MI in Kirkmaiden cemetery. Will keep trying though.
Kind Regards
Jeanne
Hi akc,
Thank you so much for the census information, narrows it down a bit, I know she's not on the 1881, so must have died in between. Do you know if she's living on her own on the 1871? I can't believe she would be on her own as she had lots of nieces and nephews, maybe she was just independant.
Thank you again, much appreciated.
Kind regards
Beannie
