Skinner portabello road
« on: Saturday 27 June 09 08:12 BST (UK) »
Hi,
does anyone have any info about the Skinner family who used to have a hotel or public house in the Portabello Road in London about 1900 to 1910.
Their son, Percival Francis Skinner is my grandfather.
Thanks
Treagus, Pettigrew, Skinner

Hi phil47 and welcome to rootschat ;D

Have you looked in the Rc Surnames list to see if anyone else is hunting your people?  At the top of this page  4th button from left Surnames- click there and look.  Also I'd suggest, add your Surname interests..

Have you looked for your Skinners in 1901 or 1911 census?  How old would your grandfather have been then- assuming he was born at that time :D

Hi phil47,
Could this be a possibility in 1901?

186 (Colville Hotel), Portobello Road, Kensington.
RG13/28  12/16

George F Skinner  head mar 36 Licensed Victualler  Paddington ,London
Annie      "             wife  mar  34                                Worcester, Worcs.
Nelly M E "             dau          11                                Padddington
Elsie A F   "            dau           2                                    "
George H Pearson  servant s  20 Barman                Rothwell, Northants
Rupert Warner         "           s  21  "                        Hanley, staffs.
Henry J Stone           "           s  19  "                        Exeter, Devon
Mercy Parsons         "            s  22  "                        Dalston, London
Dorothea Stanley    "            s  22 Housemaid Dom    "                "

This may not be your family as Portobella Road is a long road and i m sure there would be other pubs/hotels, this is just the first i came to.
Perhaps Percivals siblings might hold a clue.
Best wishes
 cathy :)

I wonder if Annie is his second wife?  There's a big gap between Nellie and Elsie- doesn't have to be wife #2 but would be worth keeping in mind as a possibility.

cathy, you probably found the correct family- even tho it's a long road the likelihood of two Licensed Vict. of the same surname in the onroad is small ???

Aha!
Same family in 1891
19 Goldney Road, Paddington.
RG12/7  44/16

George F Skinner  head mar 26  Mercantile clerk    Paddington
Annie          "         wife  mar  24                             Worcester
Percival F   "          son            3                              Paddington
Nellie M E   "          dau            1                             Paddington

Might be worth having a look on Google maps street view for no 186, the numbers on the doors are usually a better indication of the correct house.
I agree Charlotte, there is an unusual gap in children perhaps indicative of other children who didnt survive?

Best wishes
 Cathy  :)

Yes Cathy, distinct possibilty that there were other children born who didn't survive long... freebmd would cover that. I guess nothing hinges on it but curiosity drives one to puzzle over these things.

I sometimes think our ancestors would be amazed at how interested we are at the details of their lives.

Heres a photo of the pub with the name Skinner above the door, that´ll be George Frank Skinner. I myself am trying to find out who was the landlord in the 1980´s
