Helping a friend
« on: Friday 25 February 05 21:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'm hoping you can help a friend of mine, she's trying to trace a Patrick Gilligan (possibly McGilligan) who spent a few years in the Mansfield area of Nottinghamshire, until late 1966, maybe early 1967. We know for certain he was born in Ireland. He was acquainted with Glynis (sp?) Salsbury, who was in her late teens at the time, she lived on Mount Crescent, Warsop. Her mother was referred to, by Patrick, as the Welsh Dragon. Patrick had a younger brother, unfortunately we don't know his name.

Does any of this mean anything to anyone? My friend has already spent more than 20 years looking for Patrick, any help you can give us will be greatly appreciated.

Main research names are - Rutherford, Smelt, Priestman and Holden.  Also researching Govier, Hall, Raines, Usher, Temple and Usher-Temple.  All in Hull (with the exception of Rutherford, which is Hull and Edinburgh)

Is this an enquiry about a missing person rather than an enquiry trying to trace an ancestor ? I assume your friend has tried the usual agencies, such as the Salvation Army (they are experts in the field of tracing missing persons) since she has been searching for such a long time.

You could try posting a bit more information on this site. On the information given anyone reading this can only guess at Patrick's age. Was he somewhat older than Glynis ?  Where was he employed in the Mansfield area ? Was he a labourer on a building site or was he in a specialised field of work ? If he was in a specialised field he may have stayed in that type of work which might make it easier to find him although he could be retired by now.

I think the leading question is did he lead a lifestyle that indicated he had given you his real name ? It is fairly common for young men, working away from home and sowing their wild oats, to give a false name so that once they move on with their life they cannot be traced.
