ANY INFORMATION ON JAMES GUNN WHO MARRIED CHRISTIAN HESLOP IN 1847 AT LAMBERTON TOLL ON THE SCOTTISH BORDERS. THEY MOVED TO SUNDERLAND IN 1851/2 WHERE JAMES DIED IN 1856 AGED 46. THE INFORMATION I WOULD LIKE IS WHERE JAMES LIVED PRIOR TO HIS MARRIAGE AS I CAN NOT GET ANY FURTHER BACK THAN 1847

What birthplace is given in 1851?

What parental/occupational/witness info is on 1847 marriage cert?

 banshee,

Was the Lamberton Toll marriage ( on Scotland's side of border) an "irregular marriage" carried out by a  "scotch preacher". And before statutory registered marriages started in Scotland in 1855.

With GUNN been a very Scottish surname, from very north of Scotland, have you searched for James in Scotland ?

the only information i have is that christian heslop married a robert windrem on june 26 1842, witnesses john white, shusann gutrie then married james gunn on march 28 1847 in the name of chritianan windrem witnesses james dixon and jane conighie. james gunn was a stonemason journeyman and was born in scotland, i dont know his parents names or if he had any siblings. this is how i can not go any further back as there are many james gunn.i would be grateful for any clues that may help.his marriage was classed as an irregular marriage. as i have no info before his marriage it would be a waste of time researching scotland as i have no clues.

The only James Gunn that seems to fit is a baptism on 5th December 1810 in Edinburgh. The parents are listed as Adam Gunn and Margaret Sheils. the other four (searching 1809-1812) are in Caithness, Invernessshire and Orkney.

Note that this is from the Scottish Old Parish Records and  these only listed  Church of Scotland baptisms and, even so, are not always complete.

I'll see if I can find anything else on Scotlands People - I've got a few credits lying around  :)

Did they have any children? The Scottish traditional naming conventions might have been used in their naming.

Hmmm

I think that I've found him on the 1841 in South Leith (Parish No 692/2 Ed 5b Page 1), with mother, Margaret.  He's a painter and glazier  :(

Also, one in Aberdeen, aged 35-39, who's a mason, journeyman but he is married with many children. This one would need to be followed up to check. Parish - Old Machar 168b ED 16  P 3

added - the Aberdeen one is the only mason b.c. the correct time who is listed on the 1841 Scotland census  that I can see

What were their children's names in date order. As I said, it might give a good indication of his parent's names.

Have you found any likely ones in England in 1841?
