1891 Census Look Up Please - Holborn
« on: Saturday 26 February 05 11:11 GMT (UK) »
Hi!

I am searching for one Elizabeth Martha Knight, widow, born about 1822, St Lukes, Middx.

The address I had for her in 1887 was Union Buildings, Lather Lane, Holborn, but she died in Merlins Place, Amwell, Holborn in 1894, Not sure where she might have been in 1891.

Most grateful for any help

Thanks
Bambino

Hi Ray!

Yes it is - I believe she was born Elizabeth Martha Warner, but there is a little confusion as she was originally married to someone by the surname Callcut.

I am having difficulty tracing her marriage to Thomas Charles Knight. (He alternates calling himself Thomas Charles with Charles Thomas, which really doesn't help!) And then there's the problem of whether she called herself Warner or Calcutt on her marriage certificate.  Their first child  was born in 1850.

Have you got them through the census 1851 to 1881/1891 ?

Where was Charles Thomas/Thomas Charles born?

If not got all the census, what are the childrens names? and when born?

Hello Bryant!

Many many thanks for the marriage info - the information on that certificate will help enormously!  If I order that certificate, do you know what district I need to quote, or will it be enough to quote Vol. 2?

He was born in Whitechaple from what I can make out.

I have the family on the 1861 census at 27 Pear Tree Court, Clerkenwell (calling himself Thomas!) and he is a gatekeeper.

In 1871 they are living at 25 Pear tree court and he is a Metal Caster and in 1881 they are Union Buildings, Leather Lane, Holborn.

On all the census he calls himself Thomas and I wonder if that was to avoid confusion with his stepson Charles Calcutt who was living with them on the 1861 census or maybe even Elizabeth's first husband who I believe was also called Charles!!

He died in 1887 at Union Buildings, still listed on death cert. as Thomas Charles.

I am yet to find him on the 1851 census but now I know he was married by then, it gives me more to look out for.  I also need to find Elizabeth on the 1891.

They had children as follows.
Abraham born 1860 (my link), Catherine bn abt 1863, william Thomas bn 1856, Mary Ann bn abt 1850, Eliza bn abt 1858 and another name that I can't make out on the 1861 census but female, possibly Laura bn abt 1851.

Many thanks again for the marriage info :-)

Kind regards  Bambino

Hi Ray!

Thanks for the look up - I'm pretty sure that it is not them as Charles/Thomas lists his birthplace as Whitechaple, Stepney, Clerkenwell and Middx - no sign of Somerset!!

Thanks again - nice try
Kind regards

That is the district...West London...it got incorporated into London City district in 1870.

and you would be amazed how many people used their middle name throughout their lives and not for any specific reason other than preferred.
