Possible obituaries - Prestatyn 1940's and 1950's
« on: Monday 06 July 09 17:08 BST (UK) »
If anyone has access to newspapers covering the Prestatyn area in the 1940's and 1950's would it be possible for you to look up two deaths for me to see if there is any reference in either the Births, Deaths and Marriages section or as a stand alone obituary.  In neither case was the cause of death likely to have made news in their own right but the two individuals had both been well-known figures in the local community for many years.

Firstly, Herbert JONES ... lived at Roseneath, Gorphwysfa Avenue, Prestatyn ... died 6 January 1947 and buried three days later at the Parish Church in Prestatyn.  He had worked on the railways for many years but was a well-known member of the local Masonic community.

Secondly, his wife Catherine Jones ... died at her daughter's house in Trefnant on 16 October 1956 and buried four days later at the Parish Church in Prestatyn.  She was apparently a "pillar of the community" during the war effort and sat on various committees with regard, we think, to food distribution and the like.  She was also heavily involved with the Salford Poor Children's Holiday Camp which I think was on the outskirts of Prestatyn.

Any excerpts from newspapers about their deaths or their lives would be most useful.

Many thanks.

Ian.

RHYL JOURNAL (weekly paper)
9th January 1947
Births/deaths column.
JONES: Jan 6 at Roseneath, Sandy Lane, Prestatyn aged 80 years. Herbert beloved husband of Catherine Jones. Funeral Thurs Jan 9th. Service at house 2pm. Service and interment at Prestatyn Parish Church 2.30pm.

Checked the following two papers and no mention of an obituary.

RHYL JOURNAL 18th October 1956, and 25th October 1956.
No mention at all of catherine Jones.

Notes
Herbert: There were obituaries and sometimes there were four or five quite lenthy ones. The paper was about four pages of full size with 2" columns and very small print. Any obituary would have to written by a member of the family.
Catherine: The fact there is no mention suggests that she has moved from Prestatyn to live with her daughter. There may be an entry in the Denbigh Free Press.
Hope this of some help to you.
Regards Eldon

Hello Eldon,

Just wanted to say ' Thanks very much ' for taking the time to locate the grave of my Gt Aunt & Uncle and also for taking a photo of the grave and sending it to me.

It was very kind of you, I'm not able to visit the location myself so I really appreciate your help.
