Hi all Armitage researchers.  For a rambling 26 page discourse by Spencer Armitage-Stanley of Canada posted in 1997 under heading "Armitage in Ireland - Genealogy & Family History" go to: www.geocities.com/karmit007/armitage2  - this will make your head hurt but he does mention Rory and others including immigrants to Canada and US - anyway it's quite a read.  Armitage family from Modreeny, Cloughjordan in Tipperary were Methodist prosletisers in oh so Catholic Ireland in 1800s.  I have a distant connection so stumbled on this by accident.  Good reading.  Kenvic

I was just in Modreeny in County Tipperary, Ireland and went to the old Church of Ireland cemetery. I took lots of pictures. My grandmother grew up in Lucan Ontario, Canada but our family was from Modreeny. I recognize the Armitage name from both Ireland and Canada. The Lucan , Ontario map from the1800's has the name as does the cemetery nearby.
My dad ( Hodgins family) recognizes the name from growing up.

Armitage family were in Cloughjordan, my cousin worked for them when she left school.
I will contact her and see if there is any family in the area.

Can you elaborate further and explain your source? To support your comment, my 3x great-grandfather, John Armitage, came to New York state before 1816, the year he purchased land. We think he came from Tipperary. He was instrumental in founding a Methodist church near him and one of his sons, my 2x great-grandfather became a Methodist minister. I would like to understand the history better, even though I don't have concrete family ties back to Ireland.

Kenvic, Thank you so much for the download. It must have taken a lot of time to put together. I am printing it to check against my information. I have a DNA match to descendants of Richard Armitage, through his daughter Jane. I see them on your chart. I believe that Richard was a brother of my 3x great-grandfather, John Armitage.
