A Henrietta Harpur married into my Finn family in Australia.

Not my direct line so I don't know where she came from.
My query is, is this a common spelling in Ireland?  I'd never heard it until I found her.

Dawn M

In answer to your question about the common spelling in Ireland - in the 1901 census there were only 472 individuals throughout the 32 Counties of the Island of Ireland with the surname Harpur.

166 (35%) of these people were resident in Co Wexford. The Counties surrounding Co Wexford had the following numbers:

Co Carlow: 0
Co Waterford: 0
Co Wicklow: 7
Co Kilkenny: 7

Statistically it looks like the Harpur surname has its roots in Co Wexford.

Dalton: Wexford Town/Ireland
Curran: Ballyvaloo/Blackwater/Co Wexford/Ireland
Clowery/Farrell: Wexford Town/Ireland
Flood: Enniscorthy & Wexford/Ireland
Ormand/Kirwan: Blackwater/Co Wexford/Ireland
Shortman: Bristol/Westbury-on-Trym/Manchester
Trull: Uley/Dursley/Glos
Cross: Dursley/Glos
Hazard: Bristol/Manchester
