Debbie, Frederick Garbutt's attestation papers indicate he was born 30 Aug 1894 and his mother was Mrs. E. Ditton at the address p/pipes mentions earlier in this thread. I think the age may be wrong on the passenger list as Elizabeth Florence Ditton who died in Vancouver would have been born about 1876 thus making her 18 when Frederick was born rather than the 13 that the passenger list would imply. Based on both deaths, it looks like both George and Eliza shaved a few years off their ages when they emigrated.

thanks to everybody who helped to locate my grandfather Frederick Garbutt and his mother Eliza Ditton.  I didn't know they both had second names, but I do know Eliza was born in Hull, in 1870 so you are right and she has taken 6 years from her age.  Her mothers name was eliza dibb and in 1881 she was a lodging house keeper.  There is a brother called Archibold I Dibbs born 1884 and a sister called Charlotte Lucy Dibb born 1872.  Do we know if any children were born in Canada.  Thanks again for helping.  P/pipes

You can send for the  marriage cert, where they also used their second names...
( From your reply, I assume you don't have this info) http://www.freebmd.org.uk
Marriage Dec Q. 1905 /  Sculcoates    vol. 9d  p.386
George William DITTON and Eliza Florence GARBUTT

In answer to your question, we cannot access births within a hundred years, due to the privacy laws...
The only Dittons in any B.C records are those 4 deaths above, no Ditton marriages...If they did have
children in Alberta we haven't access to Alberta BMDs regardless...one needs to hire an agent
http://www.afhs.ab.ca/registry/regab_birth.html

I imagine if someone had seen them with children on the 1916 census they'd have posted by now...

On the 1916 census it was just George, Eliza and a lodger in the household. Eliza was listed as being 41 so it seems unlikely that she would be having children after 1916.

Sorry I didn't put the url for the IGI onto the thread....If the files come up as extracted, they are most often reliable information from parish records. Submissions are not so much, but can be a good stepping stone sometimes to help find out more...You will have to cross reference this information to prove they are yours, but two siblings to Henry do seem to work out with what you already seem to know for birth times...J.J.
