COMPLETED * 1861 Census - decipher help please Sussex
« on: Saturday 11 July 09 16:13 BST (UK) »
This is from the 1861 Census RG 09 Piece 2612 Folio 64 Page 12 - the Bailey family  - can anyone work out the place of birth of the youngest (William) in Sussex? Most of the page are Staffordshire Biddulph - mother Ellen is Hampshire Southampton (other Staffs places on same page are Chell, Tunstall, Rushton and Horton). Thanks

Troughstones? Lane, Biddulph, Staffs

Thomas 54 Dealer in Glass and China bn Biddulph
Ellen 43 bn SOuthampton, Hampshire
James 22 bn Biddulph
Thomas 18 bn Biddulph
John 15 bn Biddulph
Hannah 11 or 12 bn Biddulph
William 8 bn Worthing Sussex

Now I was worried for a mo that I havent got the right family, as you say he was a farmer, and this one is a glass n china dealer.
But wifes birtplace, and all children tie up, so I am sure it is.

Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex

Lizdb - thanks - I agree it's the right one - he was a farmer in 1861 & in his will ("of Troughstones" died 1868) - must have branched out a bit in 1851 - I'll have a wander through the directories and see if I get lucky, though I think Bailey is the most common name in this area...
