I'm looking for Immigration info. on Jay Henry CARLETON.
He immigrated to Sydney, N.S.W. before 1869.
He was born, in Portland, (Maine, Maryland, or Oregon), 1848.
His parent's were Jay Henry CARLETON and Elanor GLASSON.
I can't find him on any U.S.Census, or his parent's.
As I say he's a mystery man.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

detholmes.

I am descended  from Jay Henry Carleton. My Great Grandmother was Ellen Carleton born  17/01/1871 Died 24/09/1960. Ellen's mother was Sarah Conwell from Killybegs  Donegal in Ireland born 1846. Ellen Married Henry Fleming on 8/04/1889 in Sydney. My Grandmother is their daughter Ethel Fleming. My cousin and I have quite a few DNA matches in Massachussetts in America with the Carleton surname in their tree . Also JAY Henry and Martha's son John Jay 1894-1992 and his wife Dorothy had a son named Allanwho did a DNA test and its uploaded on Gedmatch. That is how my cousin and I connected to the American Families. it's still a work in Progress. We think that Jay may be a James or a John but we are not sure, he is a mystery.Regards, Wendy

When he married Eleanor Harris in Sydney 4 Jan 1882, he said he was born in Canada.
Have you looked there or have you eliminated that possiblility?
Is this him:
Anglican Parish Registers, Sydney
4 Jan 1882
Jay Henry Carlton, widower, 37, contractor living in Granville, born in Canada
parents: Jay H Carlton, gentleman, and Eleanor Glasson. there is an accent mark, maybe, over the first "S" of Glasson

Eleanor Harris, widow, born Isle of Man, 46, living on Elizabeth St, parents Patrick Kneale, boot maker, and Ann Caunim?

Yes that’s him. His daughter Ellen is rumoured as saying he was Irish but my father ( who fought in WW2 ) referred to Jay Henry Carleton’s  family as Yanks. (American ) Jay Henry also had an alias John J Creed and he had a tattoo of initials J. H. C. He is definitely a Carleton but we are thinking he was maybe another J name such as John or James. We also think there’s a possibility he may be the illegitimate child of Eleanor Carleton and maybe she later married a Glasson ?

Previous post on the same man.

The 1894 birth mentioned in that post:

METCALF JOHN J
1983/1895
Mother: MARTHA J
BOURKE

When he married Eleanor Harris in Sydney 4 Jan 1882, he said he was born in Canada.

There is also a police record as James Henry CARLETON in 1882 where he states he was born in Canada.

I am wondering what other certificates have been seen and what they give as his birthplace.  The certificates for the children of Sarah should give marriage details that could be verified or not.  It is important for the timeline to know where and if they married.

Ellen Married Henry Fleming on 8/04/1889 in Sydney.

The 1931 Queensland Police Gazette has an entry indexed as Jay Henry CARLETON alias John J. CREED.

A few of these ads appeared in the Brisbane papers in 1931.

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/21689479

FLEMING - Executors of the estate of John J. Creed, sometimes known as F. H. T. Walton, are anxious to learn present whereabouts of heirs, among them Mrs. H. Fleming. Write to Box M74, "Courier."

It seems he had a few aliases.

You need to see the birth certs of his three children to see what is recorded as his place of birth.

The prisoner record for James H CARLETON born Canada can be found here.
As well as an amazing picture of his fantastic moustache it gives this info:
Birth: Canada 1845
Arrived in Colony: ship Adeline Gibbs, 1866

The Adeline Gibbs was an American ship described as a whaler, so possibly he was a sailor who jumped ship? In 1865 he does not seem to have been on the crew.
