I have a Margaret Bell married to a William Marriner 21 April 1840 in the parish church Longtown.  On the marriage certificate William's father is Fergus Marriner who I know is married to Jane Norman.  Margaret's father is Jonathan Bell I can't read his occupation I would like to know who he is married to and who was Margaret's mother.  Margaret was born about 1819 in the Family Search details it only gives her birth but no parents names it does give William's name.  Can anyone help fill in the details please   Norma

I am unable to answer your question, but I do have a Thomas STUBBS (b 1827) who married Ann Bailey BELL (b 1823) in 1846 at Gretna. I am able to follow most of their children through their records in New Zealand. Do you know anything of this Thomas Stubbs (son of John Stubbs and Mary?).

There's a Jonathan BELL 40 in Longtown in the 1841 census ... he was a Cotton Weaver.

With him were
Hannah 15
Charles 16
Mary 14
Jane 3

There was a Jane BELL bap Arthuret 3 Dec 1837, dau of Jonathan and Jane

There were Charles and Hannah BELL both bap 25 Dec 1830 Arthuret (same parents) - were these "late" baptisms I wonder?

There were several Jane BELL deaths in Cumberland around that time ... including

Q2 1839
Jane BELL Longtown Vol.25 P.78

The IGI reference to Margaret that you found is someone "working back" from the info that they hold - it may (or may not) be correct.

Hi Norma
Jonathan is in the 1851 census living in Graham Street Longtown with his second wife Mary  (his first wife Jane died in 1839 and is buried at Arthuret).

In the 1851 census he gave his age as 51 and place of birth as Wigton.

He married his second wife  Mary Graham at Arthuret in November 1841, and gave his fathers name as John Bell, weaver.
So I think you need to look for a Jonathan BEll born about 1799-1800 in Wigton, son of John BEll, weaver.

cheers
Bridget
