Red John Lewis, Llanrhystyd. *COMPLETED*
« on: Thursday 16 July 09 19:42 BST (UK) »
There are a couple of queries I have on 1851 Census for Llanrhystyd, Cardiganshire - RG10 / 5560 -  and I hope someone can help me.

Red John Lewis aged 34, Without Cure of Souls and his brother Red Lewis D Lewis also Without Cure of Souls.  Can anyone tell me what 'Without Cure of Souls' means?  Does it mean they were Clergymen?  Also, I wonder why would they both be called Red or is this a title?
They also had a brother Evan who was a Graduate of Cambridge which I would have thought was quite unusual for someone living in this area at this time.

I wonder if anyone can help me?  ???

RG10 is the 1871 census - not the 1851

I think Red is possibly meant to be Rev - Reverend

Thanks Carol,  I have muddled notes and I must have written the wrong year on when I printed out the census!!

Maybe it's Re'd without the apostrophy.   :)  I have not seen that description on a Census before and was not sure if it meant priest or something else.   Wonder why they didn't just write curate or clergyman?

Must admit it's a new one on me as well.

I have seen clergyman. pastor and priest but never "without cure of souls" before
