Running out of ideas to find Henry ADAMS
« on: Friday 17 July 09 08:25 BST (UK) »
Hi Helpful People,

I have been in contact with a person in England, Christine, who may (or more that likely not) share an ancestor with me.

I offered to help her try and track his life in Australia, but I'm stumped already. She's ok with me asking you folks for help. Here's the story so far:

Christine's grandfather, Henry Adams, was born on 25 December 1895 in Bethnal Green, London. He had no middle name.

His parents were William George Adams and Jane Sophia Adams[nee Ormes].
Henry married Emily in 1919. The story was that he was wounded in WW1 and she nursed him.

In 1920 when Christine's father, Robert was born, Henry was living in Hackney, London. He was a borough surveyors' clerk. Their 2nd child Allen lived for a few months and died. When Emily was expecting their 3rd child, Henry disappeared. Emily named the 3rd child Peter Allen Adams.

The family received a letter for Robert, dated January 1925 but postmarked August 1925 from Henry. It was posted in Birregurra, Victoria, Australia.

Christine feels that Henry might have changed his name. Allen is a possibility due to his 2nd child.

I have searched NSW BDM for deaths for Henry Adams and Allen Adams. I don't have access to Vic BDM. There is no record for either name travelling to Australia in ozships or findmypast.

Is this a hopeless cause?? Thanks.

Tracey.

Hello, and welcome.

a quick search by mother's maiden name was not helpful only 2 individuals with Ormes as a maiden name from 1921-85.

Looking for henry/allen/alan/adams etc also not helpful as there were no matches with the parents names at all and the following had no parents details but were closish in age.

Hi tracey,
I mention this with some hesitancy becuase it is, as they say,  a stretch of the imagination, but as you have nothing much....here goes....

There is a burial at BIRREGURRA Cemetery for WILLIAM HENRY ALLEN

ALLEN was, as you suggested, a possible for "a new name"

Your Henry's father was WILLIAM.

Of interest also is this man's date of death which is 27th August 1925.

Now, you do not give us a day of August for the postmark of the letter to young Robert.

Does this look a possibility to you?
there are no otherdetails on the file I have, but perhaps another chatter may see the death and offer more.

Hi Sparrett,

I checked out his death rego and the William Henry Allen who died aged 52 in 1925 had parents John Allen and Susan McSporran. #10544. So although tempting I feel it is a red herring.  Of course he may have been empoying Henry Adams, I wonder what his occpation was.

Robyn

Going back to WW1, there is a service record on Ancestry for Henry Adams (occ Clerk) of 139 Clark St, Bethnal Green aged 18 years and 2 months on 17 Feb 1914. He didn't last long as he was declared unfit due to defective vision and was discharged on 27 Mar 1914.
