Prospect Avenue, Glasnevin
« on: Friday 17 July 09 19:55 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

My Uncle Peter Maguire lived at 16 Prospect Avenue up to the time of his death in 1956....he was a Blacksmith and worked very close to home.

Unfortunately childhood memories being what they are, I can only vaguely remember visiting him at his home and workplace (which I seem to remember was close to the cemetery)......I also seem to remember the name Primrose Terrace. I checked my Thom's directory today and there was a reference to Primrose Terrace, and that it was on Prospect Avenue.

Is there anybody living near there who could see if number 16 was still there, or if there is a Primrose Terrace.....a photograph would be lovely, but is a bit much to ask.

This is the first part of a two-part posting.....the next one will be looking for help finding any of his descendants.

On the 1939–1940 Dublin City Electoral Rolls, Peter and Julia Maguire are shown as living at 14-16 Prospect Avenue and share this address along with 8 other people.

I guess Primrose Terrace may have consisted of these 2 multi-occupancy dwellings or possibly a block of similar houses.

You can check the Electoral Rolls at this link:

Thom's directory for 1949 lists number 16 to 18 Prospect Avenue as tenements. None of the occupants are listed.

I can't see any blacksmith listed in the area but there is an Iron works nearby, where a blacksmith could have worked.

Iona Engineering, 3 Prospect Road, Hugh Cahill prop.

This was located just north of Cross-gun's bridge, which is over the Royal canal.

My partner passes on his way to work everyday.

Only worry is that a small section of the road was demolished in the early 80s to build a cut through road. It may have only been about 4 houses. Hope it's not Number 16.

Bad news.
There's a modern house for no. 16 . I'll spare you the heartache of what replaced it.
There's a few different types of old houses on the road.
The first image is what might be primrose terrece no.s 56 on.
The second image is houses that are  lower no.s and maybe they're what no. 16 looked like.

Having a blacksmith in family makes life easier is some ways. It generally was passed down through generation after generation.
Do you remember if it was industrial work or were there horseshoes floating around your childhood memory. It might be handy to know if he was running his own forge.
Just down the road there was Merville Dairies. They were massive. All horsedrawn milkfloats, I think right up till the 60s. So I'd say if Merville didn't have their own forge your Uncle could have been doing well out of that. And it would have kept him shoeing horses long after other blacksmiths had to pack it in.

Hi Ms. Smokestoomuch,

Thanks a million for your help and the terrific photos.
My childhood memories is one of seeing horses whenever mam took me over there....also he was apparently hurt very badly by a kick in the stomach fromm a horse.

Once again, thanks a million.
