BIBBY - MALDON.. Completed with thanks.
« on: Sunday 27 February 05 13:55 GMT (UK) »
According to family recollection, my Gt Grandfather had his own travelling funfair. His youngest son, my grandfather was born at Maldon in 1907, and according to his birth certificate, at a place called WOODHAM WALTER.  Altogether there were 7 other brothers, and they all used to box semi-professionally, and the brothers would challenge the general public to fight in the ring at their fathers funfair. This would have been at a guess about 1910-1915. I am wondering if there would be any old archives anywhere that I can access to find out if there is any information about this.  The Gt Grandfather's name was HENRY BIBBY. I'd be grateful for any info if anyone knows. Regards............. Lyn

I suggest trying the Essex Record Office.  They have an online catalogue at

http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk

you could also try the Libraries catalogue on the same site - called ELAN.  The local libraries often have local books on this sort of thing

Hello Shirley. Thank you for the information. I wonder if it's the right Henry? He married an EMILY SMITH, and they were shown on a census as living at Hobbing ( I think it was) End. Their eldest child George was born approx 1895. Henry died in 1937 and Emily died 1955.

Hi The time frame is wrong for your grandfather, but this could be a link to his family.

Hi forest. Would you have any details as to whether you are connected to the Bibby's? My grandparetns, and most of their families are buried at St Lawrence church. My Bibby gt grandparents are buried
  • North Street Cemetery. Southend.
  • Sutton Road Cemetery
If you can pass on any information I would be really grateful, as I have hit a brick wall at the moment. Thanks  :) Lyn
