Sorry - there are at least 12 possibilities in Middlesex for that period and unfortunately the GRO index is very unhelpful in that it doesn't start to show the age at death until the mid-late 1860's

In 1861 they were living in the registration district of St Luke and in 1871 Louisa was in Poplar.  St Luke was replaced by Holborn in 1869

However - there are no deaths registered in any of those areas for Edward

3 assumptions
1 He died in Middlesex
2 He died before 1866, none of the ages are what I consider close for the deaths 1866 up.
3 He had no middle name

I now think there is 4 possibilities

Mar 1862 Marylebone 1a 350

Sep 1862 Hackney 1b 231

Sep 1865 Hendon 3a 77

Dec 1865 Marylebone 1a 311

Of course none may be him

Hi

Not a particularly easy task with a reasonably common name like Edward Lewis, in a large metropolis where there will be other Edward Lewises and for much of the 1860s age on death is not on the index. It also doesn't help when you can't pin down a registration district.

In 1861 the family were living in St Luke's registration district. On the 1871 census the family were in Bromley by Bow which was Poplar registration district. The last known child Rees is given with a birthplace of Islington but was in fact registered in Clerkenwell.

Births Jun 1862
LEWIS  Rees    Clerkenwell  1b 564

The child may or may not have been born posthumously so without the details of the birth certificate (up to 6 weeks to register the birth allowed so in theory a birth in February could register in the June quarter) you can only be sure Edward was alive on census night 1861 - 7th April and for a couple of months afterwards.

So before we start looking there are at least 4 known registration districts in the mix and possibly others where the family might have lived in between. Looking at all the Edward Lewis death registrations in Middlesex known are in any of the four registration districts already listed. None from 1866 onwards fit his age on censuses so that leaves - if he died in Middlesex (you have to start somewhere but the family could have crossed the Thames for instance in between the censuses, Kate's birthplace on the 1871 census indicates they did before), 7 possible death registrations. Three are in what I might term nowadays as more the west end of London - Marylebone and Pancras (Westminster is really more the west end but they are definitely not east end London districts). One is Hendon so an outer further north Middlesex district, leaving two in the East end which is where Edward and then his family were on the 1861 and 1871 censuses.

Deaths Sep 1862
Lewis  Edward     Hackney  1b 231
Lewis  Edward John     Stepney  1c 361

You give no indication he had a middle name (sometimes not used when a person marries or on censuses but usually appears in other sources such as on children's registrations) however when faced with Stepney or Hackney when the family were first in St Luke's and then Poplar I would have gone for Stepney as the more likely.

On this map which you can hover over to give you further place  information

http://archivemaps.com/mapco/parish/parish.htm

St Lukes is more Holborn/Clerkenwell area and moving east from there is Stepney and then Poplar. Hackney is further north

Which is a long explanation which ends up with none of the Middlesex possibilities looking a particularly good option.
I think from your other post you are aware of the detail that exists on Australian death certificates. English death certificates are much more limited in the information they supply. See

http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/deaths.htm

Even if you obtained the correct Edward Lewis death certificate and that seems to be quite a big if, it will give you no information about his parentage.

Hi

Upton was a tything in the parish of Hawkesbury Gloucestershire

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/GLS/Hawkesbury/Gaz1868.html

Hence you get this sort of census entry

1851 census HO107 1835 folio 480
Sherston Magna, Wiltshire
Thomas Lewis 19 House Servant  Hawkesbury Upton, Gloucestershire

So Edward Lewis' birthplace of Upton Gloucestershire on the 1851 census was perfectly compatible with his birthplace of 'Hawkerby' Gloucestershire on the 1861 census.

Thank you for confirming that Valda, :)

I have been and am still looking over this site for the past 15 mins or so.

http://www.hawkesburyhistory.com/

I am at a loss at the moment on how to prove his parents.

CaroleW, thank you for your reply.

Hi

There doesn't seem to be any burials in Hawkesbury for an Edward Lewis.

The actual Hawkesbury baptism register would give Edward senior's occupation.

Yes I do need to look at that baptism register

The 1820 will of Jane Iddols has him as a Exciseman 2nd line 2nd page

The actual Hawkesbury baptism register would give Edward senior's occupation.
