Marriage of James PANES & Frances
« on: Wednesday 22 July 09 12:40 BST (UK) »
Hi all

have spent ages looking for this pair without success.

James Panes b1783 Blagdon Somerset was married to a Jenny who died in 1823. His eldest child was born in 1826 so he must have married Frances b 1783 Chew Magna  between 1823 and 1826.

Would like to find where and when they married and Frances maiden name I believe they may have married in Bristol.

Thanking you in anticipation.

Did they have any children after 1837? If so a birth cert would give Frances's maiden name.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

census information is Crown Copyright from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Hello Leofred,

I have looked at Freereg for the marriage you mention, I cannot find it on there in Chew Magna.

It does have a marriage at Chew Magna on 26/08/1816 between Richard Panes, bachelor of Chew Magna and Frances Evans, spinster of Chew Magna. Witnesses were: Mary Panes and Samuel Gadd.

There is a marriage much earlier in Burrington, Holy Trinity, between James Panes of Blagdon and Jenny Hollier of Burrington. Witnesses were: Sarah Plumly and James Panes.

There are many Panes baptisms in Burrington in the 1810s which I looked at. None for James and Jenny Panes that I could see.

Hi Jo

Thanks for your reply. I have all your info Jenny Hollier was his first wife and I wondered if Richard Panes was his brother and he died and James married his brothers widow. But as you know nothing is that simple, have not found a death for Richard.
I do belong to the Somerset groups and have looked through all the Chew Magna, Blagdon and Burington Parish records and also had look ups for the ones which were not available.

As it was his second marriage I wondered if he got married in Bristol but there is nothing as you say on freereg  or the IGI or indeed Ancestry.

Fingers crossed that someone out there has the missing answer.

Thanks once again its much appreciated.

Hi Leofred,

Sorry I have had no luck with your marriage.  :'(

There is a burial for Richard PANES 19 Jan 1824 Blagdon St Andrew. He was aged 31

I see his baptism in 1793 to Richard and Betty

Richard PANES was buried 3 July 1824 Blagdon St Andrew. He was aged 65
Jane PANES was buried 12 Nov 1788 Blagdon St Andrew. She was aged 30 (I do note a 3 month old Jane was buried in December)

Betty PANES was buried 10 June 1831 Blagdon St Andrew. She was aged 86 (Seems too old to have been having these boys)

Elizabeth PANES was buried 17 Oct 1840 Blagdon St Andrew. She was aged 81

This looks like Young Richard's brothers

John PANES was buried 1 Sep 1823 Blagdon St Andrew. He was aged 26
George PANES was buried 19 Oct 1855 Blagdon St Andrew. He was aged 60

Jenny PANES was buried 23 Oct 1822 aged Blagdon St Andrew. She was aged 34

Richard PANES = Jane WILCOX 18 Feb 1781 Blagdon
Richard PANES of Blagdon = Elizabeth SOLOMON 9 Apr 1792 Yatton

Cheers Kris  :)

Hi Kris

Thats great info thanks. Now my theory is Frances Evans from Chew Magna Married Richard Panes and his brother married Jenny Hollier from Blagdon. Richard dies leaving a widow and Jenny dies leaving James a widower. Frances and James get together and perhaps dont marry as she is a

already Mrs Panes.
Is that far fetched? would be interested to hear what you think.
On the census Frances gives her place of birth as Chew Magna and in the Chew Magna parish records she is the only Frances in that time frame.
It all fits .
Thank you once again youve been brilliant.

Janice

Interesting stuff - I am currently researching my Family (The Cross') from Blagdon. Albert Cross married an Eliza Panes (born c. 1846) in the Parish of Bedminster, Bristol in 1866. I have the marriage cerificate. Eliza's father was George Panes (a Butcher). I have not been able to nail down either Eliza or George in any of the Census'.

If any of this is familar with anyone I would be pleased to hear from you,

Nigel.
