The records for The Essex County Lunatic Asylum - later Warley Hospital - are now available on CD-Rom and microfisch from the Essex Records Office.  They make fascinating reading and have doctor's day book records as well as commital documentation, death certificates etc.

The staff at the ERO are both helpful and knowledgable.

I started to put a link to a website about a children's home in Hornchurch but the site's author has beaten me to it:

My mother Eileen her sister Biddy aka Barbera and their brother George  were in the Cottage Homes  before and after 1928 ( mums birth year )
Hawthorn cottage was where Biddy was  I forget which one my mum was in and do not know where George was .
Their last name was Dyer . They were all born in the Shoreditch/Islington area
I assume you have had a look at the workhouses site  www.workhouses.org.uk
Sadly George Dyer died in 2005 and Biddy is in the early stages of dementia .
I think I may have messaged you before on the same subject via another site
Regards and best wishes
