For a Singleton who married an Elizabeth Watt
this is prior to civil registration.

I have found from the census her birthplace was
SCOTLAND is there anyway to locate which part
of SCOTLAND, as this is rather a large place to start
looking. ;)

Hi Jinks,

I would order a copy of the entry in the original parish register.

That might give you the brides birthplace and even her parents if your lucky. Should also give you witnesses to the marriage.
This would depend on what year the event took place though.

Cheers
Geoff

jinks,

Have you searched every census?  Sometimes you can be lucky and can find a census in which a more precise birthplace is provided.

Perhaps if you provide more details of the marriage - husband's name, year, where you found it (I couldn't see a pre-Sept 1837 marriage for an Elizabeth WATT to a SINGLETON in the online IGI).  Also of Elizabeth's age from censuses ...  Names of children? - Elizabeth might have followed Scottish naming practices?

Ooops

Sorry just checked the date and not pre registration!

Richard Singleton married Elizabeth Watt on the
29th April 1854 at St Johns Kirkham.

Witnesses were Henry Bilsborrow and Jane Watt,

In 1851 and Elizabeth Watt resided at The Hill as
a servant the age and SCOTLAND fits also a
servant at the same time is a Catharine Watt also
from SCOTLAND.

Also in 1851 a family of Watt lived in the same area
not old enough to be the father.

The head of household was a James Scott Watt b.1820.

Children of the marriage of Richard and Elizabeth
were James, Robert, Mary Ann, Robert, Catherine,
Jane, Richard, Joseph, Joseph and John.

Elizabeth died/buried on 19th September 1913 aged 84 years,

Sorry about the mis-information.

jinks,

The marriage certificate should at least state the name of Elizabeth's father.  That would be one further piece of information to help narrow the search.

You didn't mention whether you have looked at every census - just in case!

Cheers,

Judy

If you can get the death certificate from Elizabeth Watt then you should find out who her parents were. From there you can search the OPR recrods in Scotland for her birth at around 1829 to these parents.
Looking for Hugh Marr and Mary Drummond.

Hi Jinks,

I've just had a look at the 1871 census for you, I'm afraid that Elizabeth ststes she was born in Scotland on that too.

They are living at Cockey's Farm, where Richard farmed 24 acres.
This is the census details

Catharine Singleton 1863  Ribby with Wrea, Lancashire, England Daughter  Ribby with Wrea  Lancashire
Elizabeth Singleton 1829  Scotland Wife  Ribby with Wrea  Lancashire
James Singleton 1855  Ribby with Wrea, Lancashire, England Son  Ribby with Wrea  Lancashire
Jane Singleton 1865  Ribby with Wrea, Lancashire, England Daughter  Ribby with Wrea  Lancashire
Mary A Singleton 1858  Ribby with Wrea, Lancashire, England Daughter  Ribby with Wrea  Lancashire
Richard Singleton 1826  Kirkham, Lancashire, England Head  Ribby with Wrea  Lancashire
Richard Singleton 1868  Ribby with Wrea, Lancashire, England Son  Ribby with Wrea  Lancashire
Robert Singleton 1860  Ribby with Wrea, Lancashire, England Son  Ribby with Wrea  Lancashire

Sorry the 1871 doesn't narrow down the Scotland search.

I had the same problem until I discovered the couples 1st child was also born in Scotland, I managed to locate his borth certificate, so I have an area but still cannot find the father's details!!

Good Luck
