help with my next step.
« on: Sunday 02 May 04 06:09 BST (UK) »
With the help of Frances, Chris, and Lynne  I am progressing nicely with my BARTLETT family.
My last exciting find was the birth record of my gggrandfather Jabus who - according to Parish records-  was born 1799 in Chatham Kent to parents Alexander and Mary.

With birth certificates not issued at that time  - is a copy of Parish register enough proof to record in History file?. They give only a minimum ammount of information.

I'm still trying to find marriage of Alexander and Mary too.

I was taught that you need three pieces of information about the person to confirm a connection.  This is very difficult the further back you get.

Other information could be census, marriage records and wills.

Is the person or their siblings named after the parents or grandparents?

It's very difficult sometimes.  You should keep all information about the family or people with the same surname from the same area and while you are tracing back try to fit the information together.  It's like a jig-saw puzzle which has some extra pieces which don't fit.

Also keep an open mind.  If a person doesn't seem to fit at first look again later.  Sometimes a person seems to fit and turns up later to be from a different family.  It's all part of the fun.  You can guess at the family connection and the years later find the proof.

Perhaps someone else will have some ideas as to proof.

Census information is Crown Copyright, from
Norfolk: Gooch, Loveday, Lake, Betts
Suffolk: Gooch, Crosby, Turner
Hampshire: Laws, Burrows
Kent: Beer
Jersey: Barette, de Gruchy
East London: Middleton, Gower, O'Farrell, Smith, Weston
