Chilvers Coton records for 1790s
« on: Tuesday 28 July 09 05:03 BST (UK) »
I am looking for a George and Mary SHAW who have a John baptised in Banbury in 1800. George is shown as a Boat-builder.

Someone told me about a record on IGI

George SHAW/ Mary Calaway 26 Sep 1790 Chilvers Coton, Warwickshire.

and that there is a baptism to presumably to this George and Mary of
George 01 Aug 1796 (age at Christening: 4)

It would be great to know if George at marriage or baptism of son George is shown as a boat builder. We are assuming he moved along the canal/river building boats.

There are also George SHAW marriages at Chilvers in 1785 and 1815 and perhaps same man.
Interesting that Geoge junior is shown as age 4 as it is likely the John at Banbury was also around 4 when baptised as he marries in 1815 well at least first child is 1816
Thank You

Seems a tenuous link at best but I can certainly look up those Coton details when next in the library. Banbury and Coton are both on linked canals.
I can tell you that in 1836 the John Shaw listed in Chilvers Coton was a weaver.
Shaw is a fairly common name in Coton/Nuneaton, in fact I have one living opposite me.

Thank You that would be lovely of you.
All I know about my John and Elizabeth Shaw is that they have 3 daughters baptised at Banbury.
for the first 2 in 1816 and 1817 he is a leather dresser and in 1819 a skinner.
1838 when daughter Elizabeth marries he is a leather dresser.

I have not found him in 1841 census or any deaths.

There is a baptism of a John in 1800 in Banbury to a George and Mary and I am trying to place them as that places John in Banbury. Yes I saw a lot of Shaw in Chilvers Coton

Ron, cannot get down today but should fit it in tomorrow.
There was/is a boat-building yard in Coton, one thing you may have overlooked is that a builder would not necessary travel along the canals but would be based at a yard somewhere.

You do not say if you have already searched the Banbury Records apart from what is on the IGI (not 100% by a long way) and in your shoes I would first concentrate on that area as you have definite family there, you may get help on the following site

I will get back later tomorrow.

A lot of people in Banbury checked various records for me and the baptisms in 1800 and then 1816 1817 and 1819 were only records found for SHAW around that time. No marriages,

Separately I am asking about a    Marriage St John Coventry 1815 for John Shaw and Elizabeth Lee perhaps my folk as daughter Elizabeth born/baptised 1816

<a href="http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,395165.msg2659970.html#msg2659970">Marriage St John Coventry 1815 Family History Local History</a>

I would guess that boat builder might move yards every few years as business situation changed. Perhaps George (if him) was in Coton 1790s and then Banbury in 1810s and then somewhere else or back to Coton

Managed to get on the viewer for a few minutes and can tell you that the marriage document of George Shaw in 1790 revealed no details of job as I suspected.
I had a look at all the Shaws in 1841 and most were weavers, the rest coal miners.
I will have another look for those other years you mentioned, probably tomorrow.

Thanks very much Al, I sort of expected marriage would not show occupation.
Could it have had witnesses?
Perhaps the 1796 baptism might have George's trade
And I suppose Coventry 1815 marriage would not say if John a leather dresser

PS I have the details for Banbury events.

I suppose George likely to be deceased by 1841 but I should look around for him.

The marriage certainly had witnesses but I did not note them as you only asked about his job, I called in again today but could not get on a viewer but will try after the weekend.
Whether the marriage entry listed the man's occupation in those days depended on the Vicar, some did it, others didn't.
However I did have a look at the 1684 census which showed that the two  Shaw heads at that time in Chilvers Coton were a Silk Weaver and a Collier.
The 1781 Census had more Shaws there, three were Ribbon Weavers, two were labourers and one was a sieve maker!
So no history of boat builders in those families but that doesn't mean that there never was one. I will return after the weekend.

Please Al
no need to go back to the marriage record - is ir possible to check the 1796 baptism it may have George's trade.
But as you say it is sounding like these SHAW were not in Boats.
It was just the near date of marriage and being a likely place for boat building that led to looking at Coton

Your library sounds like a busy place
