Retreat Place, Parkstone.
« on: Wednesday 29 July 09 13:14 BST (UK) »
Hi.

Is any local historian able to tell me if Retreat Place, Parkstone, Dorset
still exists. I believe there is a Retreat Road, in Wimborne, has this any connection?
I ask as the 1891 census shows a relly as living at Reteat Place.  After Rereat Place the enumerator moved on to Sandy Lane, if this is any help.

Any info much appreciated.

Hi,

There is a Retreat Road in Wimborne, off St Johns Hill .

There are a few Sandy Lanes in the area but none near Retreat Road.

No Retreat Place in Parkstone now according to my modern street map of Bournemouth area.

Nothing showing on my 1900 map of Wimborne either, sorry.

Hi Nanny Jan.

Many thanks for taking the time to look.    Probably all demolished
over the years.  Again many thanks.  Dud.

Hi,

Can you find the enumerator's complete route......Retreat Place, Sandy Lane,..............?

I might be able to locate the modern street names.

Hi again.

Looking through further census it appears that after Sandy Lane the enumerator went into Woking Road, Parkstone.  I see from Streetmap that Woking Road is still there so would assume Retreat Place would have been in the vacinity.

Hi,

It could be just a name change; there are plenty of old houses in that area.

Hello Dud,

I am in the vicinity of Woking Road and will go and have a look to see if there are any clues as to the whereabouts of a Retreat Place.

Will get back to you.

Jo.

Could be a name cut into the stone (or brick) work of a building in the area. Also local, will have a look next time I'm round there if Jo doesn't get back to you first.
