I'm trying to take back a certain Howarth family in Rochdale. Howarth is very common in Rochdale and luckly in 1881 they had a son Whatmough, very uncommon but sadly 1871 is before he and any of his siblings are around.

Parents are quite old JOHN HOWARTH is 41 and born in Rochdale - Cloth Hooker and Wife Elizabeth is 39 and also born in Rochdale and is Cloth Hooker Wife --------- they live in Whitworth, Spotland, Rochdale

Hi 47813,

Like you said HOWARTH is a very common name around the Rochdale area, coupled with the fact that he was called JOHN and she was ELIZABETH (common names ) it will make it very hard to find a Marriage for them. There is at least 9 on FREEBMD that could be them.

Have you got the Birth certificate of WHATMOUGH? (Mothers maiden name will be on there)

Families used to name there children after there mothers maiden name..and there is a Marriage on FREEBMD that could fit.

John Howarth & Elizabeth Whatmough's marriage in 1864 is on Lancs BMDs index, it took place at St Bartholomew's, Whitworth.

Lancs BMDs also have a birth for Whatmough Howarth in 1874, registered in the sub-district of Whitworth and Brandwood.

So they don't seem to have moved away from Whitworth area

Hello, I have noticed on quite a number of ''look-ups'' for the Rochdale area very often the districts come under Spotland. Whitworth is around six miles from  Spotland . In fact it is about half way between Rochdale and Bacup ,a few minutes from me in Bacup. I think Spotland must have been the registration district at one time.  There is a cemetery at Facit about half a mile from Whitworth .Hope this infro helps - Harieta

I seem to remember that there was a possible Elizabeth Howorth in Facit that was married and a Boarder - The other boarder was a Whatmough!!!.

I will go and find it.
