CAN ANYONE HELP WITH ANY INFO ON GEORGE CASON STEPHEN. HE WAS BORN IN 1817 ON THE IOM. HE COULD HAVE BEEN A CLERGYMAN AND HIS WIFE WAS HELEN BORN IN 1814 IN SCOTLAND. THANKS

I think, his name was George Caesar STEPHEN - the 1861 looks a bit like  "Cason"  or Casson" - but a closer look, it's "Caesar" with the "ae" written in that traditional way backtoback touching as one character, as in "Julius Caesar" (probably an official explaination of how it is written but I don't know it !)

Stephens of Ballaugh
....... landed proprietors in Ballaugh in 1515. ....Daniel (STEPHEN) was clerk of the parish from 1770 to 1792, and also .... schoolmaster..... His son Thomas (STEPHEN)   entered the church and became curate to the Revd Daniel Gelling Rector of Ballaugh (1777 to 1801).

Thomas (STEPHEN) ...born in 1760, married in 1800 the Rector's daughter Charlotte ( GELLING) .........the lively Miss G,' by whom he had a large family, most of whom died young. He became Vicar of Marown in 1819 and Vicar of Patrick in 1827. He was also Vicar General.  His son John Clowes, born in 1806,........practiced very successfully at the Bar.......His daughter Charlotte Augusta (born Aug 15, 1805, died Oct 6, 1862) married Joseph Gill, C.E...........John Clowes ....married August 17, 1841 (to)  Elizabeth Swan (at Patrick) and had issue.

married a Grindlay from Bo'ness.  Coming home from his first tour abroad, the young
doctor went to have tea with a Walter Grindlay, a  cousin of his own, whose shipping trade had led him to
leave Bo'ness for Liverpool. He found Mr. Grindlay had many daughters,

there is a thread on http://www.isle-of-man.com/cgi-bin/interests/genealogy/bulletin/index.pl?noframes explaining how to get manx BMDs
however note that civil registration only started post 1877 (with a very few voluntary regs pre this date) - for records before these dates you get a certified copy of the entry in the official (1911) copy of parish registers - as this official copy is on mormon microfilm you might as well borrow these films for 50% of price of a single cert.  See http://www.manxnotebook.com under fam hist for film numbers etc
