David MILLER, Jewel case maker, married Mary CUNDILL in 1883, London
« on: Sunday 02 August 09 22:02 BST (UK) »
I am a newcomer to RootsChat and would be grateful for any help and guidance in solving a long-standing mystery in my family.

Mary CUNDILL, born 24 Dec 1857 in Edinburgh, was the daughter of Andrew Tait Cundill and Margaret Pringle and was the cousin of my grandmother Jane
Eleanora McIntosh.

In the 1881 Census, Mary, aged 23, was living in Edinburgh:
168 Rose Street, Edinburgh.
Andrew Cundell (sic), head, M, 47, Blacksmith, Edinburgh
Margaret     ''    , wife, 45, Hull
Andrew      ''    , son, 6, Scholar, Edinburgh
Mary          ''    , daur, U, 23, Jewel case liner, Edinburgh
Kate          ''    , daur, U, 17, Upholsteress, Edinburgh
Isabella      ''   , daur, U, 11, Scholar, Edinburgh
Minnie       ''   , daur, U, 8, Scholar, Edinburgh

Mary CUNDILL married David MILLER, Jewel case maker, in London:
1883 Marriage solemnized at the Church of St Philip in the parish of
Clerkenwell in the County of Middlesex (Holborn Registration District)
No.425                        Dec 24th 1883
David Miller, Age 25, Bachelor, Jewell (sic) Case Maker, 15 Yardley St.
Mary Cundill, Age 25, Spinster, 24 Lloyd Square
James Miller, Butler (decd.)               Andrew Cundill, Blacksmith
Married in the Church of St Philip according to the Rites and Ceremonies of
the Established Church, after Banns by me, Alfred T. Fryer.
This Marriage was solemnized between us, David Miller, Mary Cundill, in the
Presence of us, Robert Carr, Margaret Cundill, Henry Thomas Probert. in
London in 1883.
(David MILLER was also born in Edinburgh, in 1859.)

An extensive search of the 1891 and 1901 Censuses in both England and
Scotland failed to find this couple. A search on ancestry.com failed to find
them in immigration lists or American censuses. I have also looked in FreeBMD fo deaths.

Yours sincerely,

John Johnston

Hi All,

I have only recently discovered that the cousin of my Scottish grandmother, Mary Parker Cundill, died in Dublin in 1894:

Death notice for Mary in Dublin Daily Express, 12 July 1894:
MILLER -- July 9, at Cork street Hospital, Mary Cundill, aged 36, the beloved wife of David Miller, Jewel-case maker, late of 18 Raymond street, South Circular road, deeply regretted by a sorrowing family. Funeral from Hospital at 9 30 this (Thursday) morning for Mount Jerome.
Notes: Cause of death was Typhoid Fever.

 1901 Irish Census shows:
27 Vernon Street, Wood Quay, St. Peter's Parish, Dublin
Wilson Race, Head of Family, Church of England, Read & Write, 31, M, Jeweller's Shop Assist., Married, England
Esther Race, wife, Church of England, Read & Write, 32, F, Married, England
Edward Race, son, Church of Ireland, 6, M, Scholar, Not married, Dublin
Florence Race, daughter, Church of Ireland, 5, F, Scholar, Not married, Dublin
Ethel Race, daughter, Church of Ireland, 4, F, Scholar, Not married, Dublin
David Miller, Boarder, Presbyterian, Read and Write, 41, M, Jewel Case Maker, Widower, Scotland
William G. Simmonds, Boarder, Church of England, 25, M, Clock Maker, Not married, England.
Notes: David Miller died in 1918, in London.

 1901 Irish Census
Cottage Home for Little Children, Tivoli Road, Kingstown, Dublin
 Included in 47 children are:
Marjory Miller aged 7, Inmate, birth place not known (was actually Dublin)
Edith Miller, aged 12, Inmate, birth place not known (was actually London)
Notes: Confirmed in the Cottage Home records that these are sisters.

Sadly, Marjory MILLER died while employed at the Cottage Home in 1917

but Edith Mary MILLER married James Alexander CAIN, School Board Officer, on 15 July 1914 at St Paul's Church, Dublin (Church of Ireland).

I would be grateful for any help in tracing this couple and finding descendants to bring closure to this sad story.

 Thanks,

 John

Thanks for updating this thread, adding the link, and for your comments, Monica.
I have also posted details of the same family on the RootsChat.Com Dublin forum and have had much help there.
Regards,
John
