Honolulu
« on: Sunday 02 August 09 22:34 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know of a William Henry Pain. He lived in my house in Somerset, England, UK.  He travelled to the Hawain Islands sometime between 1880 and 1910. How did he get there? What did he do there? He was something to do with tramways I believe.
Any ideas fffrom the Hawaiian islanders?

You can see him on the 1900 census at FamilySearch. [W.H. Pain].

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start

He was a manager of F.T. Co.  - whatever that may have been.  Arrived in the US in 1889.  He was a boarder and there were a bunch of other people named Pain in the same household.

I found an article in the Hawaiian Gazette from 20 Oct. 1899 that says how he was found not guilty of contempt of court.  He was manager of Hawaiian Tramways and held 75 shares of stock in the company.  There are a bunch of articles mentioning him in regards to the Tramways business (mostly legal issues) on www.newspaperarchives.com, which is a subscription site.

He seems to be mentioned in these books too:  http://www.rootschat.com/links/06tt/

Thanks to everyone for your help. Will need to see why he went to court.
Would still like to know by what method he arrived in Hawaiian Islands.
