Martin family - Newmarket and Cambridge
« on: Monday 03 August 09 13:43 BST (UK) »
I am researching my family history and have discovered that some of my ancestors were apparently quite heavily involved in horse racing and traing at Newmarket and indeed directly at Fitzroy House.

My great great great grandfather, William Martin (1818 - 1894) is described in a newspaper report of his son's death (1887) as "the respected trainer of Fitzroy House".

His son, William Scott Martin was also well known in the area as a contributor to Sporting Life and often wrote under the nom de plume of Martingale.

I am also looking for any information on the following people, all of whom again were based at Newmarket;

Mr Edwin Martin (1845 - ) Trainer of Horses
Mr Edwin Martin (1866- ) Jockey
Mr Archibald Martn (1874 - ) Jockey

I would be extremely grateful for any information you can provide in relation to any of the above or indeed if you are able to point me in the direction of someone who might be able to help.

Hello and a warm welcome to Rootschat :)

Just to clarify, so that people don't spend time searching for information you already have - are you looking only for equestrian-related material on these individuals, or are you also looking for their births, marriages, children, deaths, travels etc?

Thanks for reply, yes looking purely for information based on their ties with Newmarket and the horse training.racing business, I already have quite a lot of other information but it is this connection that interests me and I am hoping there might be some pictures somewhere of them, as I do not have any at all.

Thanks

Hi, I realise you posted this some years ago but Edwin Martin was my great grandfather, he was a racehorse trainer and jockey in Newmarket.  Please let me know if you would like any further information.

Hi Emma.
i see you are still after details of the martin family i have had several recent (last 5 years) additions from Florida :-
Hi Anne,
Yes, I am a descendant of Scott Martin. My grandfather was Frederick Maurice Martin married to Minna Black. My father was George Frederick Martin born in Regina, Canada. I am a veterinarian living in Florida, USA. A year ago I was trying to find my ancestry through ancestry.com and I think I came across your name. Glad you wrote. I would like to know more of my family history. Scott

From SJ Fraser
My wife Suzanne is the Martin and she has a brother Robert Martin their father was Ian Martin the son of Edwin Martin who was married to
Annie Mumford in 1888.  Edwin and Annie Martin are on the 1911 census with no children. Ian Martin was born in 1916 but we can not find any record, his sister Diana was born in 1917 and she has a mothers maiden name of Harris.
Edwin Martin was the son of Edwin Martin (brother to William Scott Martin) and Catherine Dodds.
do you still have my email address (*)
I still have the family bible and am in the process of sorting out all the bits now that my father has died and i need to modify what i have and regroup. my brother will be posting some bits on drop box later in the year.
