John Bates of Hugill and Ings
« on: Monday 03 August 09 18:56 BST (UK) »
Hi can anyone help with finding the birth and marriage of John Bates who farmed at Heights , Hugill after 1822 but also had a son Christopher born at Windermere around 1820 .
In the 1841 census he is said to have been born in Scotland around 1787. He died at Low Borrans ,Applethwaite in march 1866 .
He married a Elizabeth Bigland in the 1810's it was most likely her second marriage as she had a son called John Bigland born around 1810 in Westmorland , she died in May 1836 at Heights ,Hugill aged 47 but I don't know where she was born or married or the christian name of her previous marriage .

Many Thanks Fellsman

Hi,

Is it possible that Elizabeth's son John was illegitimate rather than from a first marriage?

If so, could he have been baptised at Witherslack on 03 Nov 1809?

Chris

You are certainly in the right area. I would have thought the marriage should be nearby. I believe most marriages took place at the Parish church (Windermere or Kendal), but if the illegitimacy is correct, they could have married at one of the smaller churches. Even though there is no IGI entry for the marriage, it would probably be worth checking Hugil, Staveley, Witherslack, Winster, and Troutbeck as well.

Elizabeth's  christening is as Betty Bigland at Windermere 19th oct 1788 and a possible sister Anne Bigland chr 11th feb 1787 daughters of John Bigland.
Found John Bate in the 1851 census as John Batt  at Burnt knott which is now Brunt Knott a farm near Staveley about a couple of miles from Heights at Hugill . He's down as born at Applethwaite,
