10 a ..... What Area Was That, Please? (Sorted, Thanks)
« on: Thursday 06 August 09 22:02 BST (UK) »
??? Hand written GRO Birth page. The place name looks impossible. But, the registration district is " 10a ". I figured this might be more straightforward to sort out? Rough part of the country will do. If it's not West Sussex, it's probably not my man anyway :)

 Thanks.

:) Cheers for that, Stan. Being a doughnut I, of course, forgot to include the date. Not him anyway. Though I now suspect I might have got him. Horsham - as he said in 1911. Having said Brighton, in 1901. ('Near enough').

I'm amazed to see Horsham as 2B though! Always associated that with Portsea / Portsmouth.

 Ever onwards .....

The whole of Sussex is 2b as well as the Portsmouth area.  As a rough rule the higher the number the further north it is.  That is very rough though as Cornwall is 5 and Wales is 11.

:) Cheers for that, Andrea. It's worth knowing. I have a lot of people from the 2B area.

I have a couple of maps of census and registration districts pinned up on the wall.  Bought in pre computers days.  Invaluable!

;) Cheers again, all. Some nice tips above. Thing is; 90% of mine tend to be " 2B ", and Portsea at that ~ or Alverstoke, of course.

Like the exact dates the census's were taken on though, little things like this can prove invaluable  :)
