Does anyone have a Photo of Church Street School, Portsmouth please?
« on: Thursday 06 August 09 22:31 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have a photo of Church Street School in Portsmouth?  I have been trying for months to obtain one and I'm getting to the stage where I think I must have imagined I went there! It was demolished about 20 years ago and replaced with a new school called Charles Dickens. It was on the corner of Church Street and Hertford Street in Landport.  I attended in the early 1950's.
I have tried the local museum and library as well as Charles Dickens School, unfortunately to no avail .

Hi
Welcome to Rootschat.

Have you tried the Local Education Authority they often keep log books, pictures etc of schools, especially if the school no longer exsists. A letter to the local newspaper might get some results as well. Try looking on sites such as Friends Reunited, I just had a quick look and it is there including a photo of sports day in 1952,  with what is probably the school in the background. 8) 8)

Thanks Jan, the local education people destroyed all the records when the school was demolished.  I've tried the local newspaper and only got a photo of the last piece of the school being demolished. The sports day was held at Governors Green in Southsea, Church Street had three asphalt playgrounds but alas no grass! :(

Hi Paul, did you get any joy with your request for a photo of Church St School Portsmouth?

If you haven't done so please Portsmouth Records Office at the City Museum and ask them for a look at their photo collection for which they hold an index. They normally require a day or so's notice for a particular photo as they hold them in a separate area and need time to get them out.

You certainly didn't dream of the school as I saw it most days on my way on errands etc!
