Selmes, Gurr
« on: Saturday 08 August 09 08:59 BST (UK) »
Jesse Selmes b. 8 June 1791 Rye Sussex married Ann Gurr. I think they had 6 children b. Brede Sussex. Any help with dates, names would be appreciated. Also believe Jesse was married prior to Ann Gurr and had a child, Delia. Dates, names etc unknown.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Kerry

Hi

In 1841 Jesse (an ag lab) and Ann "Selemes" are in Brede, both aged "45" (i.e. 45-49).  With them is one child, Francis (male) aged 11. All born Sussex.

There are various Selmes marriages on the Sussex Marriage Index around the Brede area but no Jesse.  No Ann Gurr to anything like Selmes either.  Where did you get your original information?

Hi

My great grandmother is Frances Selmes. She had a daughter Monica b 1910 ISH and at least three other children but no marriage records. I am Trying to trace my great grandfather to no avail. I believe he could have been Canadian.

Hi and welcome
Can you give a bit more information?    Where did Frances live?   Where were the children born?  Is Monica your ancestor?  Who did she marry?
Every bit helps with this sort of puzzle.

Hi she lived in Hastings. Monica married Cyril Holmes. Monica and Cyril are my mother's parents. So my grand parents. Frances Selmes,( g grandmother) to my knowledge never married. She did have a partner at one point who we believe was my great grandfather but the story goes he went to war and didn't come back. He was Canadian.

Hi and welcome.

Monica C D Selmes' birth was registered at Hastings Q2 1916 volume 2b page 54 mother's name Selmes.

Monica C D Selmes' marriage to Cyril F Holmes was registered Battle Q2 1936 volume 2b page 127.

It might be worth getting copies of both to see if any mention is made of her father's name.  On the birth one he might be mentioned if not already dead in presumably WW1 and Frances still waiting his return.  On wedding cert he should be named?

PDF downloads from GRO at £7.00 each so not too bad to hopefully resolve Monica's father and open up further channels of research.
