Now if a great uncle had been a postman in County Cavan, how would I go about researching that?  Who would have records of that?
GREEN, SKELLY, SHERIDAN of Virginia, Co. Cavan.
BROWN, CARR. (thought to be Presbyerians from Northern Ireland)
COOPER, perhaps from Ulster?

Hello acooper,

Sorry for the delay in replying. If your ancestor worked as a Post Office employee in Co. Cavan prior to the 1920s, when the Irish Free State was formed, try the Family history of Post Office employees site. Alternatively pay a  visit the British Postal Museum & Archive (BPMA) - Freeling House Phoenix Place - London WC1X 0DL

RE: Postman in County Cavan

Thanks for your earlier reply. My great uncle was a postman after the Irish Free State was formed, up into the 1960s I believe. I guess I would look into the Irish Postal system then.

Hi
do you know any history regarding post in Ireland? I have an MC from 1869 and the bride's father (back in Ireland) is listed as a Postman.

Was there much post back in the first half of the 19th century? and is there any directories which I might be able to track him down in?

thanks
