Vergettes, Deeping
« on: Thursday 13 August 09 14:40 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Has anybody heard of a company called Vergettes (spelling?) in Deeping near Peterborough? They were either horse dealers, breeders or stables of some kind.
Any info gratefully accepted.

Thanks

John

early 1900's to 1950-60's i believe. I will try to narrow this down more.
I'm particularly interested in employees of the Vergettes between the wars.

Thanks for the article suzard, it has to be one of the family, i wonder if this mans parents were the previous owners of the stables or whether george was the first.

George Goodale Vergette (who I think was the grandfather of george (mike) in obituary), wife fanny Eliza and family lived at Towngate House (farm) in 1901 and 1911 - his occupation is just listed as Farmer

There are 2 female servants in 1911

Just wondered if you are interested in the Vergette family, name etc in Market Deeping because the Times carries numerous articles about a property company in Peterborough called Fox and Vergette, and also another G Vergette who owns race horses, and wins races at Newmarket, Lingfield, Ascot, all over the country, the winning race horses and jockey names are given.

On the other hand if you are interested in one  of the employees that may be more difficult to find.

There was a Samuel Vergette of Peterborough who died September 8, 1939, at 36, Princes Gardens, aged 92.

Vergette is still a common name in the area. When I worked in the agricultural finance trade until retirement in 2003, Vergettes still farmed in the area between Peterborough & Market Deeping.

Try an up to date Peterborough telephone directory and there should be loads. Might be worth a circular letter to see if you can find some living relations you didn't know aboutl
