Difficult to say what it is, could be either - looks like Documents Online have it as 40718...

The actual medal card doesn't show him as KIA though?

It says very little - name, rank, regiment and number and that he was awarded the Victory & British medals, with the same reference for both.

If only the people who filled in these cards had known the trouble they were going to cause..... :D

MICs after 1916 are usually pretty bare in any info Officers may have their addresses on as they had to apply but Other Ranks that were conscripted are sometimes quite poor.
At least you can work out he didnt go overseas til after Jan 1916 as he hasnt a 15 Star.
You will get a bit more info by seeing the actual Medal Roll that the MIC corresponds to but you will have to visit or get a researcher at Kew to get this info :(
This will give enlistment date/Battalion number(possibly) and dates overseas.

SDGW has a lot of 2nd Batt Essex Reg numbered 401**
The guy numbered before Willis was also a casualty Winks 40117

Theres no Essex Reg lads numbered 407** listed on SDGW So would say TYPO.

Yes there is Ady........ 31 of them.  ;)
I bet you've got it set to 2nd Bn.  ;D
Apart from one spurious one, they all appear to be transfers from late 1916 and mainly 9th Bn and a few 1st.

But I would still go with John Willis being 40118.

It's even worse when someone posts the same query on 2 different boards and after you've researched one you find all the answers are already on the other one   :D :D

Thank you everyone.  I spoke to someone today at the NA and they believe its probably a transcription error and that 40718 is actually 40118.
