Street map of Paddington circa 1880
« on: Friday 14 August 09 10:18 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Can anyone tell me how I can obtain a clearly named street map of Paddington, Middlesex for about 1881 onwards.
I've just started doing my family tree and have found 2 places in Paddington where my grandmother and her siblings were born. I'd love to get an idea as to what it was like?

This one is 1861 http://archivemaps.com/mapco/cross1861/cross25.htm

You can buy a map of old Paddington from Alan Godfrey

Are the streets still there?  You can try the Charles Booth site to see what it was like.

What are the street names.  I'm sure if you tell us someone will be able to find them somewhere else.

Thanks Sylviaann and Eric,
I'm trying to find Grotto Passage, Paradise Street and Great Barlow Street. Don't know whether any of these addresses are still there.

If you look at this map http://booth.lse.ac.uk/cgi-bin/do.pl?sub=view_booth_and_barth&args=528200,181600,1,large,0
Look at the light blue oblong near the top right hand side you will see Gt Barlow Street and Paradise Street.  It is near St Marylebone high Street.  Now called Cramer Street.

Try this http://archivemaps.com/mapco/cross1861/cross26a.htm Top right hand corner called Barlow but Paradise Street is there.

Try this http://www.archivemaps.com/mapco/londongoods/goods11.htm
Look along Marylebone Road to High Street and follow it down

Weymouth Street is still there.  Try Streetmap

Thanks Sylviaann and Eric,
I'm trying to find Grotto Passage, Paradise Street and Great Barlow Street. Don't know whether any of these addresses are still there.

Paradise Street is now called Moxon Street
(Great?) Barlow Street = Cramer Street
Little Barlow St = St Vincent Street

(edit: PS this is in the Marylebone area of London)

These streets will probably be covered by OS Maps numbered 61 (West End) 1870, 1894 & 1914. Although they might just be covered by OS Maps 60 (Paddington) 1871 &1914. I don't have these to check!
Roll (Bermondsey, Southwark, Norfolk)
Ray/Wray (Bermondsey, Colraine?)
Rice (Bermondsey)
Oliver (Bermondsey)
Alwood (Norwich)
Jarrett (London, Norfolk)
Mendham (Norfolk)
