Greenwoods, Sheffield
« on: Friday 14 August 09 19:55 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Apologies if this is in the wrong place.

I'm working on my family tree & am looking for information regarding my Great Grandfather Thomas Greenwood, born in Sheffield in 1888 & his family. He married Rose Edith Ratcliffe in 1913 & they then moved to Leeds.

As far as I can work out he had siblings by the names of Emily, Herbert, Jessie, Percy, Minnie, Rowland & Ada. Their parents were Walter & Elizabeth Greenwood.

Any information regarding Thomas & his family would be appreciated.

Hi CJL,

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

I think you're right - these entries are my family. I have done some research through the census entries in the past but I don't have enough time to do this properly unfortunately.

I had worked out that by 1901 both Rowland and Percy had married, and had 2 children each. Herbert had also married. Minnie was sent to the Training College for Mistresses in Cheltenham.

I have also managed to work backwards & got as far as Thomas' grandfather John, born about 1821. His family lived in the village of Old Mill Bank near Halifax.

What I would like to do is move forwards in time. I'm assuming that as Thomas was one of 9 I have some distant cousins & it would be nice to complete the picture. Both my father & grandfather were only children & my two kids & I are the last direct descendents of Thomas Greenwood.

I'd like to know as much about my family as possible as I never knew Thomas & I never asked about them in the past.

Good Morning Richard,

You are most welcome.  Have you tried looking for the siblings on the 1911 census?  You can access the 1911 records on www.1911census.co.uk but it is a pay per view site, if you want to view the actual census details.

I could take a look for Rowland and Percy on the 1901 census if you would like me too.

Best Wishes

Richard,

I have just taken a look at the 1911 census index.  If your Rowland Greenwood was actually Rowland Walker Greenwood, it looks like he and his family had moved to Rotherham by 1911.

You would need to pay to view either the transcript or the actual page if you wanted to see whether there were any more children, other than the two you are already aware of.  It might be a starting point to try to move forwards.

I haven't looked for any of the other siblings.

I could see if I can find any possible marriages for the siblings, if you wanted me to.

Best Wishes

I think it is Rowland W, but I think the census entries are msinterpreted. I've always assumed it's Walter (as that was there fatehr's name) rather than Walker.

It would be great if you wouldn't mind looking up the otehrs.

Richard,

Are you 100% sure that Walter was Walter and not Walker because I keep finding a Walker Greenwood in earlier census records but not Walter.

Which records would you like me to search for.

Richard,

I have found the following records which all refer to a Walker Greenwood I cannot say whether they relate to your Walter but are the references you would need if you wanted to buy the certificates from www.gro.gov.uk

Birth Certificate

Name                             Walker Greenwood
Year of Registration         1845
Quarter of Registration     Jan-Feb-Mar
District of Registration      Halifax
Volume Number              22
Page Number                  276

Marriage Certificate

Name                             Walker Greenwood
Year of Registration         1869
Quarter of Registration     Jul-Aug-Sept
District of Registration      Ecclesall Bierlow
Volume Number               9c
Page                              2-8

After some searching I think that the page number is 238

On the same page is an Elizabeth Hill so this may be a possible marriage.

Death Certificate

Name                           Walker Greenwood
Estimated Birth Year       1845
Year of Registration       1913
Quarter of Registration   Apr-May-Jun
Estimated age at Death  68
District of Registration    Sheffield
Volume Number             9c
Page Number                619

I do not know whether you already have any information regarding his marriage or death, but wondered if you did whether any of these dates match.

Let me know what if anything you would like me to search for.

Best Wishes
