Hello

With the paid site I am with, I can take a look at the original English and Welsh census pages. But with the Scottish census I can only see what was transcribed. So if the transcriber put age 40 instead of 50 and spelt the name wrongly from the census page I cannot see it.
Elizabeth is age 40 on 1871 and 1881 James is age 5 1871 and age 13 1881. Instead of age 15 could be one died and another was names James.

Hi Alfy

I think Pam's census entries seem to be correct ones from the info you have  :) These are the children showing on IGI at www.familysearch.org to a Thomas Campbell and Elizabeth (her maiden name is also Campbell):

1. JOHN CAMPBELL Birth: 27 JUL 1856 Blythswood, Glasgow
2. ELIZABETH CAMPBELL Birth: 30 OCT 1861 Bridgeton, Glasgow
3. DAVID CAMPBELL Birth: 18 DEC 1863 Bridgeton, Glasgow
4. JAMES CAMPBELL Birth: 22 APR 1866 Calton, Glasgow
5. ARCHIBALD CAMPBELL  Birth: 07 AUG 1870 Bridgeton, Glasgow

The birth certificates are available to view on line at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

I cannot see a marriage for Thomas and Elizabeth on IGI and the only one showing on Scotlands People is in 1890 in Glasgow City which is too late you would think. If you check one of the childrens' birth certs. post 1862 (James is the most relevant) it should show place and date of marriage.

Given the birth of John in 1856, Thomas and Elizabeth may have married before the start of official registration in Scotland in 1855 which might explain why their marriage doesn't show on the statutory register after this date. The birth cert of James will hopefully help with this.

A great 1874 map of Glasgow showing registration districts to give you an idea of where the different areas were:

Given the age difference between Thomas and Elizabeth, I am wondering whether Thomas may have been on to second marriage with Elizabeth? There is this possible entry in 1861:

Thomas Campbell 45, cotton weaver
Elizabeth Campbell 31
Thomas Campbell 5
Mony (?spl) Campbell 20, daughter

Address: 18 xxxx?, Bridgeton, Glasgow Calton

There are a couple of possible 1861 entries for a John Campbell born c. 1856/7 in Glasgow staying with Campbell grandparents (likely Elizabeth's parents?)

The entries in 1861 for a John Campbell born c. 1856 Glasgow with grandparents, can't see one with a David and Janet unfortunately  :-\ They are a John and Janet Campbell, and a John and Alice Campbell.
