Fieldings Cottages, Creswell
« on: Tuesday 18 August 09 19:13 BST (UK) »
Does anybody have any idea where Fieldings Cottages in Creswell would have been?,

I've looked at some old maps but they don't show them, we have relatives living there about 1880's uptil 1900, when they moved to Chapel Row, this is also a mystery as to its position.

Any help would be great

Thanks

Tomskibabes.

Hi Tomskibabes and welcome to RootsChat

It is possible to look up the enumeration district description for the 1881-1901 census which might help, but we need more information.

If you have the census references (Piece, folio etc) please post them here.  Otherwise give us the details of the people involved

We'd love to help - honest!   :D

Hi Linda,

on the 1891 census we have William Radford aged 48, Julia Ann wife aged 40, 6 children, Susan Thorpe (married) Emily, Catherine, Eliza, Sarah and charles William and esther.

Civil parish: Elmton
Ecclesiastical parish: St Peter
Town: Creswell
County/Island: Derbyshire
Country: England
Registration district: Worksop
Sub-registration district: Carburton
ED, institution, or vessel: 11

This is all the information I can find on the 1891 census, we are local to the village of creswell but the actual position of the properties remains a mystery?

Any ideas for finding it location.

Tomskibabes

The district description says -

The whole of the parish of Elmton, together with that part of the township of Cresswell which lies to the south of the river dividing the parish of Elmton and Whitwell.

The properties around Fielding's Cottages are listed in the following order

Skinners Farm
Portland Hotel
Cresswell School
Joiner's Shop
Booths Farm
Fieldings Cottages (12 or 13 of them)
Barn Row
Willow Farm
Bridge House

Hope this helps

Linda

PS census reference is
Class: RG12; Piece: 2647; Folio 176; Page 14

Many Thanks,

where did you find the list of properties, I sorry for being niave but still learning.

Some of the properties make sense to the area I was thinking Fielding cottages could have been but no evidence of them left.

Many thanks again

Hi Michelle

No problem - we all have to learn   :D

Where did you get the census information from?  If you have access to a site where you can look at the original image (such as the one at the top of this page advertising a free trial!), you can page forward and backwards to see where the properties are in relation to each other.

On A****, when you are loooking at the image, it will say

Derbyshire > Elmton > District 11 > Page nn

If you click on District 11, then click on 'View description of enumeration district', it will give you the description I quoted above.

If you are interested in where your family lived, as you seem to be, there's some really interesting stuff.  On the 1911 census (www.1911census.co.uk), once you've paid to view an original image, you can see a lot of the enumerator's information by clicking on the appropriate buttons.

Be aware that if you want to page forwards or backwards through the original images on this site, you will have to pay for each image (probably not recommended!)

I'm still looking for Chapel Row - watch this space   :D :D

In 1901 the enumerator did his route the other way round

Elmton Green
Creswell
Gorldogs (?) Cottage
Goslin Cottage
Chapel Row
Fielding's Row  (probably Fieldings Cottages in 1891)
Yew Tree House
Willow Farm
School House
Portland Hotel

Fieldings cottages have long gone, I think it would have been Late 60s or early 70s. Just a row of bungalows there now. They where situated on Mansfield Rd just before the junction where you would turn down to Creswell Craggs. My grand parents lived there and my mother and her brothers and sisters were all born there.Hope this helps.

I'm related to the Fieldings who farmed at Elmton - were the cottages anything to do with them? My key ancestors seem to be

John Fielding b Worksop 1758 d Creswell 21st Mar 1841 m Ann Aire b 1754 Tuxford Notts d 9 Jan 1847 Elmton
