(Completed) Maiden Name on Parish Record Marriage 1832
« on: Wednesday 19 August 09 00:57 BST (UK) »
I would like some of you to check these photographs that i have taken of a parish record at my local LDS FHC.

Please can you suggest what Hannah's maiden name might be.

The record was part of a parish transcibed by the church of the Latter-Day Saints, however I believe they may have made a mistake.

Due to my tracking of my ancestors back through time in BMD and census records I have got pointers which lead me towards other possibilities. I believe I know what it says but would like a non-blinkered opinion.

Thanks for taking the time to read and reply.

Hi

I agree looks like Vasey.

Could also have been Vesey but written as Vasey. (I have seen Vesey in some records I hold and it is sometimes  been recorded as Vasey)

regards

Robyn

Lovely writing - and Vasey is definitely the surname.  ;D Is this what you were hoping it would be?

It's more a 'northern name' from up Yorkshire/Durham way:

Hi Rob,
Is there any particular reason you think it is wrong?
Looks like VASEY to me.

There is also a christening;

Richard Thomas COSTER
Birth, 15 January 1810
Christening, 22 July 1810, St Andrew, Holborn, London, England
Parents, JOHN and HANNAH

Possible witnesses to marriage ?

Trish

Trish

No I don't think it is wrong but we all need to keep in mind that names were often written by another person and spelling has varied. I have Vasey/Vesey spelling variations in certificates for the one person in my files.

I noted that Hannah made her mark and did not write her own name.

VASEY which seems clear to me in the image is most likely the the correct name.

regards

Robyn

Hi Robyn,
Yes, it can be complicated with spellings. Everyone else seems to be literate so hopefully it works out.

Thank you all for taking the time, and yes I see it as Vasey.
I had the info for some time now from the IGI on the familysearch.org website.

That is the link below and i have also copied and pasted the info from it too.
Relying on the accuracy of that said record which stated "Oasey" I could find no info of a baptismal record, that would tally with her place of birth, which on later census scans she is listed as being born in Allerton, Yorks. Obviously she may well have been born in one area and baptised in another.

In fact everywhere I searched I could find no example of such a surname in existence.

I also tried obvious similarities "Casey" for example, rather than no luck I had too many hits so added it to my brick walls.
On viewing the record I guessed that it was Vasey. Then on doing a wide search of Vasey across Yorkshire I got lucky I found records in the parish of Allerston that fit. There may well be many other possibilities to check too as I see there is other variations of the name Allerton/Allerston.

Thanks all for taking the time to assist me.

Regards Robert
