CALDWELL children to Australia COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 22 August 09 06:21 BST (UK) »
Hi all

Family history is that The children of Abigail Caldwell, nee Warnock were sent to Australia with their Uncle Hugh Warnock after their fathers death. Not really sure of this, given the ages and the date that the Uncle came out here.
Eliza b 1852, Robert b 1853. Margaret b 1857 and Abigail b 1860.
Their Uncle Hugh Warnock settled near Benalla in Victoria, married there in 1861, we have most of the Warnock clan details.
I have found a death for Abigail Colwell 1910 in NSW, father Hugh, mother Abigail, [right parents]
thought it was her as a spinster. A gravestone inscription form Beechwood cemetery NSW lists her as the wife of John Colwell.
I cant find their marriage in NSW or Vic so I don't know if I'm on the right track or not to buy her death cert.

Hi mum mum,
I am trying to get this story straight in my mind.

Abigail CALDWELL's [nee Warnock], husband died.
His name was Hugh CALDWELL??
So she sent her 4 children with her  brother to Australia.

His name was Hugh WARNOCK.

Hugh was settled by 1861.

were sent to Australia with their Uncle Hugh Warnock mum mum

The children must have arrived later as Abigail might be only 1 year ??? according to the birth dates you have given.

Now, at this point in your posting, I am a bit lost ;D

Are you able to  clarify why you think the Abigail you have located is the child born in 1861.  Is it because she has the right given name and right parents?

Hello
I will try to make it clearer.
Abigail Warnock married Hugh Caldwell.
4 children as listed.
Abigail's husband Hugh died.

The story is, that one of her brothers paid for the children to come to australia with Hugh [ Warnock]. As I said before, I am doubtful that they came with Hugh [ Warnock] because of the ages.

I thought that I had found Abigail [ the daughter's] death in NSW because the name and the parents names matched. However, then we found the cemetery inscription showing her as being married to John Colwell.  [ Caldwell/ Colwell]

I wondered if a marriage record would show her maiden name. [Abigail, that died in NSW in 1910.]

Sorry forgot.
Abigail and John Cowell had children in NSW from 1887 to 1904, maybe these birth records would show the maiden name and perhaps rule her out.

Hi,
I think the death in 1910 in NSW is Abigail Colwell nee Caldwell. I found a tree on Ancestry which lists her but not her siblings. She was the daughter of my GGG Aunt Abigail and must have married a cousin as they did back then. I will buy the death cert to see if it gives me an idea of when she arrived in Australia.
