1871 Census Deciphering
« on: Sunday 23 August 09 17:45 BST (UK) »
Hello, I need another pair of eyes to see if you can decipher a particular entry in the 1871 census.  The citation is RG10 Piece 5061, Folio 24, Page 41.  It is the census for John Swan and wife Ann. He is listed with 4 children the 2 and 3 children are sarah and william, the last is mistakenly listed as crington, but should be errington.  It is the first child that I am having problems with. She is listed as Sicity Sall Swan. Any help with deciphering the handwriting  would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Carol,

It looks like Sicely Hall to me.

Was Sarah's previous name HALL by any chance?

Looking at possible birth registrations, I wondered if she was Cicely HALL (Jun 1851 Gateshead) and her parents married later (Dec 1857 Newcastle Ann Hall to possibly John Swan)

OK, found them in 1861: RG9/3816 58 46

The older girls have the surname Hall. 'Sicely' now called Lydia  :P

Thank you so much for your help!!  I couldn't figure out the script no matter how I looked at it.  Do you think it is possible for the mother, Ann, to have been married to ?? Hall, and he died young, and being a young widow she remarried to John Swan in 1857?

(these searches give Both widowed and Maiden names in marriage indexes)

Spouse of John Swan comes up as Ann Hall / Ann Douglas

Pauline

Thanks Paulinej.  Is there anyway to find out if the spouse is widowed or not without ordering the marriage cert? I am thinking that maybe Ann married a Mr. ? Hall, pre 1852, had 2 children, Lydia and Marg Ana, and then her husband died and she married again to John Swan in 1857. What do you think?

After Pauline found both her names, I'd say this should be Ann's previous marriage

1850 marriage Newcastle
Ann Douglas to John Hall (showing as Hale on Newcastle BMD site)

1851
HO107/2403 35 25
Whickham, Durham
Marley Hill

John Hall, head, 26, Coal Miner, b. Northumberland Wylam
Ann, wife, 23, b. do.
