Help with witness surname please..
« on: Thursday 27 August 09 13:27 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Is anybody able to make out the surname of the witness in the bottom left hand corner - C. R ??? The other witness are F.B Walsh, C.L Miller and W.G Walsh.

I have two copies of this certificate - one from the GRO, and then a few years later we found the copy of the original given at the time of the marriage (1945) - but am I right in thinking that the GRO one is not a scan of the original entry in the parish register? The old copy that we have has more information on it, but a few corrected errors - would this have been filled in by somebody at the church?

Many thanks,
millerina

J B Walsh.  G S Miller
C R Farebrothe(r)?  W G  Walsh.

It's from the clerk's copy sent to the GRO, not the original.
Can you get a looksee at the parish film?

Pauline

Hi Vicky and Pauline,

Thanks for having a go at deciphering the writing, it is quite a nightmare to read! The other witnesses names I had really just guessed at from the initials of family members that I know were there, but it is really difficult to be sure as the initials look so different on both certificates! I'll have to see if I can find any births for a Farnbrothe/Farebrother - thanks for the suggestions!  :)

Many thanks,
millerina

Hi

Farebrothe would be a very unusual name, but it does exist.  There is an author called Ron Farebrothe (I say author.....it's Vigilante Comics).  Could it possibly be him?

Here's my two-pennorth

J B Walsh   Ch. Miller  (Charles?)

C R Farebrothe   W G Walsh

The C in Ch. Miller is nothing like the E in Established church or the G in W G Walsh and it doesn't look like two separate initials.

SKEATS - Surrey
BRETT - Kent & County Durham
and

Thanks for all your help - I have done a little bit of research with all your suggestions and have actually managed to find a birth for a C. R Farebrother in the area where my relatives married! Fingers crossed it might be the same person!  :)

Many thanks again!
