Hi

I believe that my great great grandparents were William JAmes Bell and Sarah Wiley, married on 26th September 1856 in Saltersland Presbyterian church.  Their daughter Jane Bell was my great-grand mother and married Edward Wright Tipping in 1897. I Know of one brother, Thomas Taylor Bell who moved to Scotland and married a Catherine Brown.

I suspect that your Sarah may be Jane's Sister.  Do you have a date of birth? is it 25/11/1869 or 28/11/ 70

There is also a connection to Aghadowey. Both Edward and Jane give it as their address on their marriage certificate (Jane was pregnant and suspect they "went away" to get married (rather than in CAstledawson or Magherafelt), but could never figure out why Aghadowey?

Welcome to Rootschat. If Jane's sister Sarah was already living in Aghadowey Parish perhaps that why the 1897 marriage took place there.

Sounds very likely!  Its amazing, Jane was a real brick wall for me and in one evening I find her parents, and two possible siblings.

Hi Karene,

Well it looks like we have the same gtgtgrandparents. Now I need to put you on the Christmas card list!!!! :)

To kind of recap what I have written in the previous posts which appears to be a little muddled on a reread, and to add the little more I have on that side of the family.

William Bell c1835 (son of John Bell c1810) married Sarah Wiley ( daughter of Robert Wiley)  at Saltersland Presbyterian Church Co Derry on 28/09/1856.
Williams address was given as Killyfaddy and Sarahs as Ballynenagh.
William and John Bell as well as Robert Wiley show occupations as Weavers.
No ages are given for the bride or groom.

William and Sarah had two children that I know about:
Sarah Bell DOB 25/11/1869 in Magherafelt , she married James Doherty in Aghadowey C of I on 01/08/1890, the marriage cert shows she is 18 years old, has an occupation as Servant, and she was living in Magherafelt. She died in Greenock Scotland 25/01/1937.
And of the second child I only know that she was  female and was born on 28/11/1870, I’m hoping this is your gtgtgrandmother Jane.

It looks like you have knowledge of a brother to these two sisters, a Thomas Taylor Bell, any idea where he was born and where in Scotland he went? I’m guessing there should be a William jr out there somewhere too!

Sarah Bell and James Doherty had three children, Dorothy c1891, William c1894 and Robert c1898 (my grandfather). The family left for Greenock Scotland shortly after Roberts birth as they are listed as living there on the 1901 census.

Hope this helps

Hi

My email address is (*) if you would like to contact me direct I would love to swop/ compare the information I've got so far. Really glad to hear from you.  Jane and the Bells have always been a real mystery.  Jane died in 1912 when my grandfather was only 3 and he was brought up by his fathers Aunt. I believe that the female birth in 1870 is her, still trying to figure out why her first name wasn't registered, its been along hard search to find her!

Hopefully hear from you soon

Karen

It's not that uncommon for a child's birth to be registered without a first name- perhaps the parents just hadn't agreed on her name at the time.
