are there any clues as to when William and Mary may have been married ?

At the moment I am assuming that the could have been married anytime between 1907 and 1939 - i.e. from William being aged 18 to the electoral register details that Dara listed.  There are quite a few possible William Davis marriages listed in the time .. anything that would narrow down the search could help.

one thing to note ... the British Army, could not have been based at Beggars Bush (or anywhere else in the South of Ireland) anytime after 1922

 Hi Shane,
Thanks for getting back to me. No idea when William & Mary got married but think it was after 1911 as he was living with a brother in Summerhill on the 1911 census. He was 22 then.
In the 1939 census he was listed as married to Mary & living at 50 Mountjoy Square then.
I know that Beggars Bush closed down in 1922 so wonder what happened to William then. Where else would he have been based? I know he went to India with the British Army in 1939 so wonder what happened after Beggars Bush.

Just re-checked the 1911 census. Beginning to think I might have some wrong info somewhere.
William is listed as being married to Annie for 3 years here with 2 children aged 2 & 0. That means they were married in 1908.His brother John lives with them at 21.3 Summerhill. Looks like Annie was from James County??
When did he marry Mary then?? And what happened to Annie & the children if this is the same William Davis I'm looking for??

 Tracey

there are about 30 marriages of a William Davis in Dublin between 1911 and 1939.. so probably a bit to many to figure out a match. Are there any clues to Mary's maiden name ?

I presume that when William was in the army after 1922 that he kept his family home in Dublin, and only stayed there himself when on leave, and was based somewhere in the UK..

Were any of the children born in Ireland? if so you can search for birth registration in civil index and then order the birth certificate which will list mother's full name so that you can track down the record of the marriage.
Shane gave the links earlier in this thread but will include them here as well-

I think but can't be sure that Nora was born in Ireland. She died in 1978 aged 65 & was my gran (dad's mum). I've got conflicting info though. The 1911 census shows William living in Summerhill & married to Annie. He was 22 & she was 21.
She's listed as coming from James Town?? Is that in Tipperary? Reason I ask is that my uncle say's that Mary is from Tipperary & was a similar age to William. Maybe she's known as Mary to the family but is actually Annie by birth?? Is this possible do you think??

looks like that Mary's Annie's place of birth is Queens county (Co. Laois) - with part of the Q missing...

If that's the correct couple then it places the marriage at 1908.. will see if that narrows down a marriage, or possible births for the 2 children

Just got off the phone after speaking to dad. They've had a conflab with the info I gave them so far & here's what they think.

 1939 census, 50 Mountjoy Sq.

William & Mary Davis. Nee O'Donnell
Henry & Nora O'Donnell. Henry is Marys brother.
 Edward & Ellen O'Donnell.
 Norah & Peter Ryder
 Isaac? & James Kenny?
 Rosanna Mooney
 Mary & Thomas Keane
 James Kealey
 Josephine & George Kavanagh

 1911 Census   Summerhill

William & Annie Davis   Dads nanny & grandad we think.
 Mary Bridget aged 2 & Margret aged 0.  Nora's 2 older sisters.
 John aged 20, Williams brother.

Nora, dads mum; Williams daughter had 3 sisters & 1 brother. 1 sister married a King from Clontarf. The Kings had property in Mountjoy Square & Lower Gardiner Street.

Julia O'Donnell married Frank Fitzgerald who worked for Brookes Thomas in Foley Street. They lived in the Caretakers cottage there.

found a possible marriage for William (snr) and Annie on the familysearch index (not that many William Davis entries to check but 40 pages of Annie & Annes..) :

 Name: William Davis
 Registration district:  Dublin North
qtr and year:   Apr - Jun 1909
 Volume: 2  / Page: 502

 Name: Annie Murray
 Registration district: Dublin North
 qtr / year: Apr - Jun 1909
 vol.: 2 / Page: 502

I dont see any William Davis marriages in 1908.. there is another possibility is Dublin South in 1907 which I will try to cross match.

and a match for the birth of Margaret :

 Name: Margaret Davis
 Reg. district: Dublin North
quarter and year: Jan - Mar 1911
 Volume: 2 / Page: 488

 Hi Shane,

Thanks for all your help, it really is much appreciated. As I said before, the 1911 census shows William & Annie as married for 3 years but they could've gotten married anywhere really. If her family are from Tipperary as my family seem to think, they could've gotten married there. Equally though, they could've gotten married in Queens Town which appears on the 1911 census as where she's from.

 Thanks again,
  Tracey
