Searching for the address on the 1881 census it does bring up Good Design Yard, King Street :D
Booth, Hornsby, Northumberland & Durham

I'd suggest that it's meant to be 'Goods', as in a place where items are designed, or stored.

Thanks everyone - it would make sense as there appear to be lots of families living there, so possibly a yard surrounded by small units.

Deaf and Dumb from inflamation in head.

Wonder if the child had had meningitis, deafness is listed as one of the possible outcomes of surviving meningitis (and no antibiotics then, so they would have been lucky to survive).

I was just starting to wonder about the cause of his disability, so thanks for that, I will check it out.
